Chapter 5

The Blizzard in the Foyer

They burst through the corridors, Julian carrying Eleanor until they reached the Grand Foyer.
But the ancestral spirits had abandoned the conservatory. They had massed in the center of the house. The black marble entrance hall was no longer just drafty; it was the epicenter of a literal, paranormal blizzard.
Winds howled at hurricane force, whipping violently around the dual staircases. The crystal chandelier swung wildly above, the bulbs exploding in showers of sparks. The temperature was dropping so rapidly that thick sheets of ice were crawling up the marble walls.
Julian set Eleanor down on her feet near the massive front oak doors. She leaned against the wood, shivering violently, her legs barely able to support her.
Sitting neatly at her feet were two large leather traveling trunks. Her bags. The malicious spirits had packed them.
Julian looked at the bags, and then at the raging blizzard separating them from the rest of the house. The dark moment descended upon him, heavy and absolute. The ancestors were not going to stop. They would freeze the entire estate to drive out the woman who did not belong. All hope of their cozy, domestic life in the library was lost.
Julian turned to Eleanor. His face was a mask of utter heartbreak, his dark eyes shining with unshed tears.
"It’s over, Eleanor," he yelled over the roaring wind. "They won't accept the arrangement anymore. They're going to kill you if you stay."
"No!" Eleanor cried, clutching his coat tighter around her. "Julian, you just said—"
"I said I love you!" Julian interrupted, stepping back from her, putting that agonizing, physical distance between them once more. "But the curse requires both of us! And I know you cannot love a cursed, brooding monster who bought you like a piece of property. I won't let my haunted legacy destroy you. You have to leave. The car is waiting outside. Your family is safe. Go back to London. Live a happy, warm life."
He was sacrificing his own happiness, resigning himself to a cold, lonely eternity in this haunted tomb, just to ensure she survived.
He reached out, his hand hovering over her cheek without touching it, a gesture of profound, agonizing yearning. "Goodbye, Eleanor."
Julian turned his back on her. He began to walk away, stepping into the biting, freezing wind of the paranormal blizzard, intending to draw the spirits' wrath toward himself while she escaped out the front door.
Eleanor stood by the heavy oak doors, shivering in his oversized coat.
She looked at the leather trunks at her feet. She looked at the man walking away into the storm for her sake. The curse fed on insecurities. It fed on the belief that their marriage was a transaction, a loveless void. Julian believed she could never love him because of how they met. She had believed she was unlovable because she was a purchased bride.
But it was a lie. All of it.
"Julian!" Eleanor screamed into the howling wind.
He didn't turn around. He couldn't hear her over the roar of the ancestors.
Eleanor narrowed her eyes. The pragmatism that had defined her life shifted, hardening into absolute, stubborn defiance. She was not a burden. She was Eleanor Sterling, and she was fiercely, unequivocally in love with her husband.
She let the leather trunks drop from her mind. She stepped away from the front doors.
