Chapter 4
The Celestial Summons
❧
Silas stood alone in the swirling nebula of his living room, staring at the space Maya had just occupied. He was a Karmic Weaver. He was eternal, infallible, and immune to the messy, biological impulses of mortals.
At least, he had been, until he moved to Elm Creek Drive.
The deafening chime echoed again. A pillar of blinding white light materialized in the center of the room. It was a summons from the Astral Court.
Silas stepped into the light, allowing the inter-dimensional transit to pull him upward.
He emerged into the stark, terrifyingly bright expanse of the Court. There were no stars here, no nebulas. Only infinite white marble floors and towering, faceless statues of the Architects—the supreme entities that governed the mathematical order of the cosmos.
Three Architects loomed before him, their voices projecting directly into his mind.
* Weaver Silas. You have failed to sever the Category 5 Anomaly.*
"I am proceeding with localized sabotage," Silas said smoothly, bowing his head. "The mortal subject, Maya Lin, possesses unusually high resistance. Her free will is... potent."
* You misunderstand the severity of the Anomaly,* the central Architect boomed. *The danger is not merely her union with Arthur Pendelton. The danger is her proximity to you.*
Silas frowned. "I am immune to mortal influence."
* You are blind to your own history, Weaver,* the Architect countered. A projection flared into existence between them—a cosmic ledger glowing with golden script. *Look upon the ancient cycles. Eons ago, before you ascended to Weaver status, your soul was mortal. And it was bound.*
Silas stared at the glowing script. His silver eyes widened as the realization crashed down upon him, shattering centuries of perfectly maintained stoicism.
The ledger showed two souls, entwined in an eternal, inescapable karmic loop. One was Silas. The other was a chaotic, brilliantly vibrant soul. It was Maya.
* She is your karmic anchor from a past celestial cycle,* the Architect explained. *When her soul resonated near your sector, the universe reacted violently to the pull. The storm at the engagement party was not a protest against Pendelton. It was the universe attempting to drag her back to you.*
Silas couldn't breathe. The strange, illogical magnetism he felt for her, the way her stubbornness made his eternal existence feel suddenly vibrant—it wasn't a glitch. It was fate. She was his.
* A union between an immortal Weaver and a mortal soul is strictly forbidden,* the Architects declared, their voices devoid of mercy. *It corrupts the order. It breeds chaos. You are compromised, Silas. You are hereby extracted from the assignment.*
"Wait," Silas said, stepping forward. "What about Maya?"
* She will be left to her mundane existence. The anomaly will self-correct once you are removed from the timeline. Her memories of the cosmic threshold will be wiped.*
"You cannot do that," Silas said, his voice rising in panic. "Her spirit will wither in that life! She will die a slow, suffocating death of the soul!"
* It is the law of the Universe,* the Architects replied. *You will remain in the Court.*
A cage of white, impenetrable light slammed down around Silas, trapping him in the Astral plane. For the first time in his eternal existence, Silas, the agent of order, felt the overwhelming, desperate urge to burn the universe to the ground.
