Chapter 6

Sunlit Corners

Elara dropped to her knees, the golden light fading from her hands. The clearing was silent, but it was no longer a dead, heavy silence. It was peaceful. The sky above was already beginning to clear, revealing a smattering of brilliant silver stars.
Footsteps crunched on the grass.
Elara looked up as Leo dropped to his knees in front of her. He dropped his clay talisman and pulled her fiercely into his arms.
Elara buried her face in his neck, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders, holding onto him as if he were the only solid thing left in the universe. She was shaking uncontrollably, sobbing into his coat.
"I've got you," Leo murmured, burying his face in her hair, his own voice thick with emotion. "I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe."
"You idiot," Elara choked out, pulling back just enough to look at his face. "You absolute, reckless idiot. You could have died."
"I would rather die than sit in that bakery and let you fight alone," Leo said, cupping her cheeks, wiping away her tears with his thumbs. "I told you, I'm not afraid of your magic, Elara. I'm only afraid of losing you."
Elara leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut. The spiritual bruising that had plagued her for weeks was already fading, chased away by the residual warmth of the golden magic and the physical comfort of his embrace.
"I was wrong," she whispered, opening her eyes to meet his gaze. "I thought my magic had to be dark. I thought keeping you away protected you. But my isolation is what made me weak. You... you make me strong, Leo. Loving you makes my magic whole."
Leo smiled, that bright, familiar, devastatingly warm smile. "Does this mean I'm allowed back in the Keep?"
"Only if you bring pastries," Elara managed a wet, teary laugh.
Leo leaned in and kissed her. It was a kiss that tasted of ozone, tears, and absolute, enduring devotion. As their lips met, Elara felt the last lingering chill of the void completely vanish from her soul.

Two months later.
The afternoon sun streamed through the large, spotless windows of *The Honeyed Hearth*, casting long, golden squares of light across the polished oak floorboards. The bakery was bustling. The blight was a distant, fading memory. The crops in Oakhaven had bounced back with unnatural vigor, and the townsfolk were once again loud, happy, and well-fed.
In the corner booth, bathed in a pool of sunlight, sat Elara.
She looked entirely different. The dark, exhausted circles under her eyes were gone. Her skin had a healthy, warm flush. She was wearing a soft, oversized maroon sweater instead of her rigid leather duster. She sat with her legs tucked underneath her, a thick, dusty grimoire propped open on the table, a steaming mug of Earl Grey tea resting near her elbow.
She looked peaceful.
Behind the counter, Leo was pulling a massive tray of fresh cinnamon rolls from the industrial oven. The smell of caramelized sugar and baking bread filled the air, a scent Elara now associated purely with home.
Leo set the tray on the cooling rack and wiped his hands on his apron. He caught Elara’s eye across the room and offered her a soft, private wink.
Elara felt a familiar, wonderful flutter in her chest. She smiled back, shaking her head slightly before returning to her reading.
She was still Oakhaven’s Spiritual Warden. She still possessed lethal magic, and she still patrolled the woods when the shadows grew too long. But she no longer returned to a cold, lonely Keep. She didn't carry the void inside her anymore.
Because the fiercest, most terrifying exorcist in the county knew a secret that the monsters in the dark hadn't quite figured out yet.
She was hopelessly, wonderfully weak to the town baker, and that weakness made her completely invincible.
