Chapter 4
The Weeping Mill
❧
The Oakhaven woods were dead silent. Not a single insect chirped. The trees around *The Weeping Mill* were twisted and black, entirely stripped of their leaves.
The mill itself sat beside a sluggish, gray river. It was a massive, rotting wooden structure, its roof caved in, its water wheel frozen in place by thick, unnatural vines of black sludge. The air here was so heavy with despair it felt like breathing underwater.
Elara stepped into the clearing, her boots crunching on the dead grass. Violet energy immediately flared around her fists, a beacon of challenge in the gloom.
"Show yourself!" she screamed, her voice tearing through the silence. "I am Elara Vance, Warden of Oakhaven! I command you to face me!"
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the shadows within the mill began to bleed outward.
It didn't form into a single, monstrous shape like a wraith. Instead, the darkness pooled on the ground, rising up like a tidal wave of cold ash. It formed a towering, formless silhouette that possessed no eyes, no mouth, only an aura of crushing, agonizing sorrow.
Elara threw her first attack—a concentrated blast of kinetic magical energy meant to shatter spiritual forms.
The blast hit the entity dead center. But instead of shattering, the shadow simply absorbed the violet light. The entity swelled, growing larger, the temperature in the clearing dropping another ten degrees.
Elara frowned, her heart rate spiking. She threw a salt bomb, followed by a searing line of holy fire.
The entity flinched, but the fire quickly sputtered and died against the overwhelming tide of its aura. The shadow lunged, a tendril of darkness whipping out and striking Elara across the ribs.
She flew backward, crashing through a rotted wooden fence. Pain exploded in her chest. She struggled to her knees, gasping for air, her vision blurring.
She reached out with her magical senses, trying to read the entity's core, trying to find its weakness. As she touched its mind, a wave of pure, unfiltered emotion crashed into her.
It wasn't a demon of wrath. It wasn't a spirit of vengeance.
* It was a corrupted Spirit of Isolation.* It was an entity born from the collective loneliness of the abandoned mill, festering for decades until it gained consciousness. And Elara realized with mounting horror exactly why her attacks were failing.
Her magic was fueled by her own isolation. She drew her power from her belief that she had to stand alone, that she was cut off from the warmth of humanity. Every time she attacked the spirit with her lonely, walled-off magic, she was feeding it exactly what it craved.
The entity loomed over her, sensing her realization. It didn't speak with a voice, but it projected a thought directly into her mind, heavy and suffocating: *You are like me. Alone. Feared. Empty. Join the void.*
The shadow expanded, forming a massive, domed barrier over the entire clearing. Elara was trapped.
