Chapter 5
The Betrayal
❧
Clara dragged herself back to the ashram just as the sky began to bleed into the dull gray of morning. She couldn't fight him physically. She couldn't outrun him. He wasn't constrained by time or space in the way mortals were.
There was only one way to end a cycle. She had read about it in the forbidden texts Mother Aris kept in the ashram’s library.
She burst into the main cabin. Mother Aris was sitting by the woodstove, calmly sipping tea.
“I need to perform a Soul Suicide,” Clara blurted out, locking the heavy wooden door behind her and leaning against it.
Mother Aris slowly lowered her teacup. “Clara. That is a dark, terrible thing to speak of. To obliterate your own spirit… it means no afterlife. No rebirth. True, eternal nothingness.”
“It’s my only escape!” Clara cried, moving toward the older woman. “If I kill myself normally, he’ll just wait for me to be reborn. If he kills me, he absorbs me and traps me forever. I have to destroy my soul entirely before he can fuse with it. Please. You have to help me. You have the obsidian knives. You know the chants.”
Mother Aris looked at Clara for a long time. The warm, maternal glow in her eyes slowly, deliberately faded, replaced by something cold and impossibly ancient.
“The ritual requires a space of deep resonance,” Mother Aris said softly. “The Root Cavern beneath us. The walls are pure obsidian. It strips the veil between lives.”
“Yes,” Clara breathed, relief flooding her system. “Yes, take me there.”
Mother Aris stood up. She walked to the cabin door, moving past Clara. But she didn't open it. She pulled a heavy iron key from her robes, slipped it into the deadbolt, and turned it with a loud, fatal *click*.
Then, she pulled the key out and dropped it down the front of her robes.
Clara froze, the blood draining from her face. “What are you doing?”
Mother Aris turned around. The older woman dropped to her knees, bowing her head in a posture of profound, religious reverence. But she wasn't bowing to Clara. She was bowing to the empty air in the direction of Julian’s cabin.
“He has waited so long, my lady,” Mother Aris whispered, her voice trembling with devotion. “Centuries of hunting. Centuries of hunger. He allowed you to run here, Clara. He guided you here. The spiritual energy of this land is the only thing powerful enough to sustain the final fusion.”
Clara stumbled backward, knocking over a side table. The Guide wasn't a savior. She was an acolyte. A reincarnated servant from their very first life, stationed here to ensure the trap was perfectly laid.
“You’re insane,” Clara breathed.
“I am loyal,” Mother Aris corrected, rising to her feet. “The Master is coming. Prepare yourself to be consumed.”
Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth and swung it with all her might. It caught Mother Aris in the shoulder, sending the older woman crashing to the floor with a cry of pain.
Clara dropped the poker, ignoring the Guide's groans, and sprinted toward the back of the cabin. She knew where the entrance to the Root Cavern was. She had seen it during her cleaning duties. She threw open a heavy rug, revealing a rusted iron trapdoor set into the floorboards.
She yanked it open and plunged into the darkness.
