Chapter 5
Feral Spirits
❧
Silas knew what he had to do. He had to break the vow. Now. If he didn't, Juliet would murder these men, and her spirit would be forever lost to the darkness.
He staggered forward, pulling his pocket knife from his jeans. His hands were shaking. Tears blurred his vision.
"Juliet, look at me!" Silas screamed.
She snapped her head toward him, her black eyes locking onto his. For a fraction of a second, beneath the feral rage, he saw the terrified teenage girl he loved.
Silas flipped open the knife and sliced it across his scarred palm, the exact same place he had cut it five years ago. Blood welled up, bright and red against his pale skin.
He fell to his knees, pressing his bleeding palm against the cold stone floor of the church, turning himself into a conduit. He channeled every ounce of his magical strength, every shred of his grief, and his profound, agonizing love for her into the ritual.
"I, Silas Thorne, release you!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, competing with the howling wind Juliet was generating.
Juliet froze. The cult leader dropped to the floor, gasping for air as her grip vanished.
"Silas, no!" the feral voices screamed from Juliet's fading form. She lunged toward him, trying to stop him. "Don't let me go!"
"Bound in life, severed in death!" Silas chanted, tears pouring down his face. "I break the tether! I break the vow! You are not mine to keep!"
A violent tremor shook the church. The stone floor beneath Silas's hand began to glow with a blinding white light. The spiritual feedback was excruciating, tearing through Silas's nervous system like electricity. He was severing a bond forged in blood and maintained by years of deep, desperate love. It felt like tearing out half of his own soul.
"I LOVE YOU!" Silas screamed over the roaring wind, staring up at the terrifying, monstrous form of the girl he adored. "SO I'M LETTING YOU GO!"
Silas slammed his bleeding fist against the floor one last time.
The tether snapped.
The explosion of spiritual energy was catastrophic. A dome of pure, blinding white light expanded outward from Silas, sweeping through the church. The shockwave hit the remaining cultists, instantly knocking them unconscious. It hit the walls, cleansing the residual dark magic of the Sanctuary in a single, roaring flash.
And it hit Juliet.
The light engulfed her, burning away the blackness in her eyes, burning away the jagged, feral static that had corrupted her aura.
When the light faded, the church was deathly silent. Dust motes drifted in the moonlight filtering through the shattered windows. Silas lay on his back on the cold stone floor, gasping for air, his body trembling violently.
He slowly pushed himself up.
A few feet away, Juliet was floating. But she was different. The sepia tones and the frost were gone. She was bathed in a soft, warm, golden light. The terrified, angry look was erased from her face, replaced by a look of profound, beautiful clarity. She looked peaceful.
Silas pushed himself onto his knees, clutching his wounded shoulder. He looked at her, his heart shattering into a million irreparable pieces.
"Jules?" he whispered.
She drifted toward him. For the first time in two months, the air around her wasn't freezing. It felt like a warm summer breeze. She knelt in front of him. She didn't say a word. She didn't need to. Her eyes held all the love, all the gratitude, and all the goodbyes they had never gotten to say.
She reached out a glowing hand. She cupped his cheek.
Silas closed his eyes. He couldn't feel the physical weight of her hand, but he felt a profound warmth bloom across his skin, a final, lingering echo of her soul.
"Thank you," her voice whispered in his mind, clear and sweet, devoid of any static.
When Silas opened his eyes, he was alone in the ruined church, surrounded by unconscious cultists. The golden light was gone.
Juliet Vance had vanished into the ether.
