Chapter 4
Ash and Dawn
❧
The wind died instantly. The unnatural cold evaporated, replaced by the crisp, biting night air rushing in through the shattered windows.
Clara slumped forward, her magical reserves entirely depleted. She collapsed heavily against Julian’s broad chest, burying her face in the crook of his neck. She was shaking from head to toe, her breathing ragged.
For a long moment, the only sound in the ruined penthouse was the distant wail of a police siren from the streets below and the ragged synchrony of their breathing.
Slowly, Julian’s arms wrapped around her. It wasn't the weak, feverish grip from before. It was a solid, possessive, desperate embrace. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the scent of rain and rosemary, holding her as if she were the only real thing in a world that had just been turned upside down.
"You're freezing," Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion. He shifted, sitting up and pulling her into his lap amidst the scattered ash and broken glass. He grabbed his discarded suit jacket and draped it over her trembling shoulders.
Clara looked up at him, her dark eyes searching his face. The sickly pallor was gone. The dark veins had vanished. He was whole again.
"You believe me?" Clara asked softly, her voice raspy. "About the magic? You're not going to rationalize this away into a hallucination?"
Julian looked around his obliterated office, then down at the beautiful, exhausted witch in his arms. The hyper-logical CEO let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.
"I just watched you pull a physical manifestation of darkness out of my heart with glowing hands," Julian said, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her cheek, wiping away a smudge of ash. "I think my days of strictly relying on modern medicine are over."
He looked into her eyes, the icy barriers that had defined their relationship for a decade completely and permanently shattered. The vulnerability in his expression made Clara’s breath catch.
"I meant what I said, Clara," Julian whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips. "I was terrified of ruining you. I was terrified of what my family would say, of what the world would do to us. But I almost died tonight, and my only regret was that I had spent ten years pushing you away."
Clara reached up, her fingers tangling in his dark, disheveled hair. "Then don't push me away anymore."
"Never again," Julian vowed.
He leaned down and captured her lips. The kiss was desperate, hungry, and overflowing with years of repressed passion. It was a collision of two worlds—the sterile, corporate king and the wild, earthy witch—finally finding their balance. Clara melted against him, the exhaustion of the spell entirely forgotten in the overwhelming warmth of his embrace.
As the first faint streaks of dawn began to paint the city skyline in hues of gold and pink, shining through the shattered windows of the penthouse, Clara knew she would never have to hide in the shadows again. She had broken the curse, but more importantly, she had finally found her home.
