Chapter 1

The Collapse

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft, electronic chime, spilling Clara Vance into the cavernous penthouse suite of Sterling Pharmaceuticals. The top floor was a monument to Julian’s hyper-logical mind: a sterile expanse of cold glass, polished steel, and stark white furniture, suspended high above the glittering grid of the city skyline. It was an environment designed to intimidate, devoid of warmth or irrationality.
Right now, it felt like a tomb.
"Julian!" Clara called out, her voice swallowed by the sheer size of the space. Her heart hammered a frantic, sickening rhythm against her ribs.
Fifteen minutes ago, Julian’s executive assistant had called her in a blind panic. Julian, who had been suffering from a mysterious, worsening chronic fatigue for months, had ordered everyone out of the building before collapsing entirely. The world’s leading specialists had run every test in their multimillion-dollar labs and found nothing. But Clara, who had spent her life hiding her true nature from the Sterling family, always suspected there was something medical science couldn't see.
She rounded the massive marble desk and froze.
Julian lay crumpled on the imported white rug, his suit jacket discarded, his tie torn loose. The usually immaculate, untouchable CEO was trembling violently, his skin pale and slick with a sickly sweat. His chest heaved as he gasped for air, his dark hair plastered to his forehead.
"Julian," Clara dropped to her knees beside him, the rough canvas of her messenger bag sliding off her shoulder.
She reached out, pressing her hand against his feverish cheek. The moment her skin made contact with his, the latent magic humming dormant in Clara’s veins violently flared to life.
She gasped, snatching her hand back as a shockwave of sensory input flooded her mind. It wasn't a fever. It wasn't a virus or a failing organ. Through her magical perception, she saw the illness for what it truly was. Beneath his pale skin, dark, jagged veins pulsed with a sickening, oily black energy. The air around him tasted metallic, smelling faintly of ozone and rotting orchids.
It was a blood-curse. A highly sophisticated, parasitic hex, likely commissioned by a corporate rival to slowly drain the life force of the pharmaceutical king without leaving a trace of physical evidence.
"Clara," Julian rasped. His striking ice-blue eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused. Even now, dying on his office floor, he tried to push her away, his hand weakly batting at her arm. "You shouldn't... be here. I told the medics... not to let you see this."
"The medics can't fix this, Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping its usual quiet, submissive tone. The outsider, the awkward step-sister who never quite fit into the Sterling family portraits, vanished. In her place was a hedge witch staring down a lethal spell. "But I can."
