The Warning

The storm broke over the edge of the Wyrmwood Forest with a violent, deafening crack of thunder, unleashing a torrential downpour that turned the village into a sea of black mud. Inside the cramped, dimly lit apothecary hut, the air was thick with the scent of dried lavender, crushed mint, and the sharp tang of woodsmoke.
Maeve sat calmly by the hearth, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders as she carefully ground a mortar and pestle. To the rest of the world, she was merely the village healer, a quiet woman who kept to herself and mended broken bones.
The heavy oak door of the hut suddenly burst open, slamming against the stone wall with enough force to rattle the drying herbs hanging from the rafters.
Rowan stumbled across the threshold, bringing the storm and the freezing wind in with him. He was encased in the heavy, silver-plated armor of the Holy Inquisition, but the polished metal was smeared with mud and streaked with fresh blood. A shallow gash bled freely down the side of his cheek, and his chest heaved with frantic, ragged breaths.
"Rowan!" Maeve dropped the pestle, rushing across the dirt floor.
Before she could reach for a linen bandage, Rowan caught her shoulders in his heavy, gauntleted hands. His grip was bruising, desperate. His pale blue eyes were wide with a terror she had never seen in him before—not when they were children facing down wolves, and not when he had taken his sacred vows.
"You have to leave," Rowan choked out, his voice raw. "Right now. Do not pack anything. Do not look back. Just run into the Wyrmwood."
Maeve looked up at him, her expression softening with an affectionate, quiet calm that completely contrasted with his panic. She reached up, her warm fingers gently brushing the rain and blood from his cheek. "Rowan, what have you done? Your oath—"
"My oath is broken!" he shouted, the words tearing from his throat in a passionate, agonizing confession. "I deserted the vanguard. I ran ahead. Maeve, the Grand Inquisitor knows. I don't know how, but he knows what you are. They are coming for the witch of the Wyrmwood edge."
He pulled her closer, his forehead resting against hers, the cold metal of his breastplate pressing into the soft wool of her dress. The unsaid words hung heavy and electric between them. He had thrown away his life, his honor, and his immortal soul to run through the storm and warn her. He had loved her since they were barefoot children stealing apples from the orchard, and he would happily burn in hell if it meant she survived the night.
"There are fifty armored men surrounding the village," Rowan whispered rapidly, his breath hot against her face. He pulled away, drawing the massive steel longsword from his scabbard. "I can hold the narrow pass behind the hut. I know their tactics. I can buy you ten minutes. It will be enough."
Maeve looked at the beautiful, foolish, fiercely devoted man standing before her. He was fully prepared to be hacked to pieces for her. Her heart ached with a profound, overwhelming adoration. She smiled, a sad, knowing expression, and placed her hand over the cold steel of his drawn sword.
"I am not running, Rowan," she said softly.
"Maeve, you don't understand, they will—"
Rowan’s words were cut off by the sound of heavy, armored boots marching in unison through the mud outside. The rhythmic clanking of steel echoed over the roar of the rain. The glow of fifty torches bled through the cracks in the wooden window shutters, casting long, flickering shadows across the walls of the hut.
They were too late.
