Chapter 4
The Hive
❧
Elias whipped the EMP device around, his thumb jamming down on the trigger.
A brilliant arc of blue electricity shot across the copper coils, humming with enough voltage to sever a spectral tether. But the possessed patrons didn't flinch.
They rose from their seats simultaneously. There was no hesitation, no human clumsiness. They moved with the terrifying, unified grace of a single predator operating multiple limbs.
The college student vaulted over the table with impossible speed, crashing into Elias before he could fire the pulse. The impact threw Elias backward, slamming his spine against the stainless steel counter and scattering the line of iron ash into useless dust.
Before Elias could recover, the old man was there, his cold, iron-grip hands wrapping around Elias’s wrist. With a sickening crunch, the man twisted. Elias screamed as his wrist fractured, the heavy EMP device clattering uselessly to the floor.
The couple arrived a second later. Heavy, icy hands grabbed Elias by the shoulders, his hair, his throat. They dragged him to the cold concrete floor. Elias thrashed violently, kicking, punching, fueled by the sheer, primal terror of a man watching his own grave open up.
But the Hive felt no pain. They simply pressed down, a mountain of dead weight pinning him to the tiles.
A heavy boot came down, crushing the EMP device into a shower of sparks and shattered plastic. The last of his tech, his last hope, was extinguished.
The student knelt over him, leaning down until their faces were inches apart. The black, void-like eyes stared into Elias’s panicked, tear-filled ones. The entity opened its mouth, and the overlapping, whispering static from the speakers poured directly from its throat, flooding Elias’s mind, drowning out his thoughts, his memories, his screaming consciousness.
The café plunged into absolute darkness.

An hour later, the rain had stopped. The city was beginning to bleed with the very first, faint streaks of dawn.
The bell above the glass door of The Neon Grind chimed merrily as a construction worker stepped inside, shaking the dampness from his high-vis jacket. The harsh fluorescent lights were humming normally. The lo-fi beats were playing a gentle, unobtrusive piano melody.
"Morning," the worker called out. "Can I get a large latte? Two sugars."
Behind the counter, Maya stood rigidly. She reached for a paper cup. Her hands were shaking violently. Tears streamed silently down her pale cheeks, dropping onto the stainless steel, but she didn't make a sound. She didn't ask for help. She just began to steam the milk.
The worker glanced around the café as he waited. It was mostly empty. Just one guy sitting alone in the corner booth.
Elias sat perfectly upright in the booth, his hands folded neatly on the table. He didn't blink. He didn't breathe. His eyes were entirely, flawlessly black, staring blankly at the sterile wall, waiting patiently for the Hive's next command.
