Chapter 8

Restoration

Maeve grabbed the heavy iron chisel she had brought down from the cellar stairs. She didn't have magic, but she understood structure. A magical lock was still a lock. It relied on a continuous circuit of energy. Break the circuit, break the spell.
She positioned the chisel directly over the keystone rune—the central symbol connecting the iron to the stone floor. She raised her crowbar high, ignoring the shadow-wraith that shrieked and lunged at her back.
Before the wraith could strike, Kaelen’s astral form intercepted it, tackling the entity and obliterating it, but the effort cost him. His projection flickered dangerously, looking transparent and weak.
Maeve brought the crowbar down on the chisel with every ounce of physical strength she possessed.
* CLANG.*
The iron sparked. The keystone rune fractured.
A shockwave of energy blasted Maeve backward, throwing her off the dais. She hit the stone floor hard, her vision swimming.
On the dais, the iron chains shattered into a million pieces.
The physical Kaelen collapsed forward, free from the bindings, but he didn't move. The magical backlash, combined with the extreme siphoning of the portal, had pushed him over the edge. His chest was still, and the ashen decay was rapidly spreading up his arms.
"No," Maeve sobbed, scrambling back up onto the dais. She grabbed his shoulders, turning him over. He was impossibly heavy, his skin ice-cold. "Kaelen, wake up. Don't do this. Don't leave me."
Above them, Kaelen’s astral projection let out a mournful, echoing cry. Without the physical body acting as a living anchor, the projection was untethered. He was being violently sucked backward toward the dark vortex of the portal.
The portal itself was expanding, roaring with triumphant hunger.
Maeve looked from the dying man in her arms to the fading ghost being dragged into the void. The restoration wasn't complete. She had broken the physical lock, but his soul was severed from his body.
She didn't know how to do magic. But she knew how to fix things. She knew that to mend a shattered joint, you had to apply immense pressure and hold the pieces together until the bond set.
She leaned down and pressed her hands flat against the physical Kaelen’s chest, directly over his heart.
"Kaelen!" she screamed, looking up at the astral projection struggling against the pull of the vortex. "Look at me!"
The glowing phantom turned his head, his pale eyes meeting hers across the chaos.
Maeve closed her eyes. She didn't reach for an arcane core. She reached deep into her own humanity. She reached into the profound, terrifying love she felt for this stubborn, commanding man. She took all the fierce, protective anger she had used to keep the world away and inverted it, channeling her own vibrant, stubborn life force outward.
"You don't get to leave me!" she shouted into the roaring wind. "You belong here!"
She became the anchor.
A brilliant, golden light erupted from Maeve’s chest, traveling down her arms and into the physical Kaelen’s heart. The light shot upward like a tether, wrapping around the struggling astral projection.
With a guttural scream of effort, Maeve hauled backward.
She felt the immense, cosmic weight of his soul. She pulled against the gravity of the portal, anchoring her feet, refusing to let go. The golden light hauled the astral projection away from the event horizon, dragging it down, down, down toward the dais.
* SLAM.*
The astral projection collided with the physical body.
A concussive blast of pure, restorative energy exploded outward from the dais. The shockwave hit the swarming shadow-wraiths, instantly turning the entire horde into harmless white ash. The blast hit the portal, disrupting its frequency. Robbed of its anchor and violently rejected by the surge of life magic, the dark vortex collapsed inward upon itself with a deafening *CRACK*, sealing shut perfectly, leaving nothing but solid stone wall behind.
Silence, absolute and profound, fell over the subterranean chamber.
Maeve lay collapsed over Kaelen’s chest, her breathing ragged, her energy entirely depleted.
Beneath her ear, she heard a sound. It was slow, steady, and incredibly strong.
* Thump. Thump. Thump.*
A heartbeat.
Slowly, painfully, Kaelen’s arms wrapped around her. They weren't freezing cold. They were gloriously, wonderfully warm. The ashen decay on his skin was gone, replaced by the flush of living blood.
He let out a long, shuddering breath, burying his face in her hair. "You... you are the most infuriating, stubborn woman I have ever met."
Maeve lifted her head, looking down into his face. His eyes were no longer glowing. They were just the beautiful, clear gray of a stormy sky. He was alive. He was mortal.
Tears—real, stinging tears—spilled over her cheeks. She didn't wipe them away. She didn't put her mean armor back on. She just leaned down and kissed him.
He kissed her back with a fierce, desperate hunger, his warm hands cupping her face, anchoring her to him just as she had anchored him to the world. It was a promise, sealed in the dust and the dark, that neither of them would ever be left behind again.
