Chapter 6

The Subterranean Chamber

Maeve stumbled into the cavernous room, the beam of her flashlight cutting through the gloom. It wasn't a cellar. It was a massive, subterranean chamber hollowed out of the bedrock.
At the far end of the chamber, the air itself was torn open. A massive, swirling vortex of dark energy pulsed with a slow, rhythmic heartbeat. It was a tear in reality, an event horizon of absolute blackness ringed by that same necrotic purple light. The portal.
But it wasn't the portal that made Maeve drop her flashlight.
In the center of the chamber, directly in front of the swirling vortex, was a raised stone dais. Kneeling on the dais, arms spread wide and wrists bound in heavy, rune-inscribed iron chains anchored to the floor, was a man.
He was wearing a torn, filthy military uniform. His head hung low, his dark hair matted with sweat and dust. His chest rose and fell in slow, agonizingly shallow breaths.
Maeve took a trembling step forward. "No. It's impossible."
The man on the dais slowly lifted his head. His face was pale, drawn, and lined with centuries of exhaustion. His eyes, though human and completely lacking the ghostly luminescence, were the exact pale shade of a summer storm.
It was General Kaelen.
He wasn't a ghost. He wasn't dead.
The twist hit Maeve with the force of a physical blow. Kaelen was alive. He was a cursed, living, breathing man. The ghostly apparition she had been arguing with, the entity she had fallen in love with, was merely an astral projection—a desperate severing of his consciousness from his physical body to patrol the estate while his true form remained chained to the portal as a living battery.
Kaelen’s astral form materialized beside her in the chamber. He looked at his own chained, suffering body with a mixture of shame and despair.
*“I am the anchor, Maeve,”* the projection whispered, his voice echoing in the cavern. *“To seal the rift, my Vanguard bound me to it. My life force acts as the lock. As long as I live, the portal cannot fully open. But a human body was not meant to endure centuries of magical siphoning. I project my spirit to remain sane, to patrol the grounds, to drive people away so they don't interfere.”*
Maeve stared at his physical body. The chains were glowing with a harsh, burning heat, slowly draining the life from him. His skin was pale, almost translucent. He was dying. It might have taken centuries, but the portal was finally consuming him. That was why he acted so mean. That was why he wanted her gone. If a human got too close, if they broke the seal on the door, the portal would surge, seeking fresh fuel.
"You're alive," she whispered, a sudden, frantic hope blossoming in her chest. "If you're alive, I can unchain you. I can free you."
*“No!”* the astral Kaelen shouted, terror gripping him. *“If you remove me, the portal opens completely! The world is consumed! And worse... breaking the seal on the door has alerted them. It triggered the rift.”*
As if on cue, the massive, dark vortex behind the dais violently convulsed. The rhythmic heartbeat accelerated into a frantic, deafening drumming. The necrotic purple light flared blindingly bright.
The air pressure in the cavern dropped to a vacuum. From the depths of the blackness, high-pitched, chittering shrieks echoed outward.
The shadow-wraiths. Not three of them this time. Hundreds.
