Chapter 4
The Truth in the Cipher
❧
The breakthrough came three nights later.
Fueled by her newly unchained magic, Clara tore through the shifting cipher. The runes unspooled, revealing the plaintext of the ledger.
Clara sat alone in the library, the emerald fire casting long shadows across the room. She began to read the entries, translating the High Council shorthand. But as her eyes scanned the lines of text, the blood drained from her face.
The ledger was not a record of the High Council's treasury. It was a private accounting book.
Julian Thorne’s private accounting book.
Clara’s hands began to shake as she read the dates and the figures. It detailed millions of gold crests stolen not from the Council, but from the shadow-markets. Julian had been embezzling from the demonic underground. He had been stealing from Valerius.
But that was not the worst part.
The final pages of the ledger were not financial records. They were correspondence logs. Magical missives sent between Julian and an anonymous, heavily encrypted source. Clara recognized the encryption. It was demonic.
She quickly decoded the final message.
* The theft is discovered. The Shadow Demon demands blood. If you wish to keep your miserable life, Thorne, you will publicly break your engagement. You will ruin the witch, Clara Vance. You will ensure she is cast out of your society forever. If she is untethered from your sinking ship, I will spare your life. For now.*
Clara stopped breathing.
The ledger slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the floor with a heavy thud.
Julian hadn't just framed her to cover his tracks. He had been forced to do it. Forced by the very demon who had "rescued" her.
Valerius had orchestrated her ruin. He had blackmailed Julian into creating the scandal. He had deliberately destroyed her reputation, her family’s standing, and her entire life, just to isolate her so he could swoop in and claim her.
The door to the library opened. Valerius stepped in, carrying two glasses of wine, looking relaxed and devastatingly handsome in a loose black shirt.
He saw the ledger on the floor. He saw the look of absolute, shattered horror on Clara’s face. The Incubus froze, immediately sensing the violent shift in her emotional aura. The desire was gone. It was replaced by a towering, icy wave of betrayal.
"Clara," Valerius said, his voice tense, setting the glasses down.
"You did it," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. She stood up, backing away from the desk. "You created the scandal. You forced Julian to frame me."
Valerius did not deny it. His jaw tightened, his golden eyes flashing. "Clara, you must understand—"
"Understand what?" she screamed, the violet magic flaring dangerously, shattering a crystal lamp on the nearby table. "That you ruined my life? That my parents are living in the slums because of you? That I spent six months wanting to die because of the shame? You played God with my life!"
"I saved your life!" Valerius roared back, the shadows in the room surging upward, mirroring his agitation. He crossed the room, stopping just short of touching her, his hands balled into fists. "Julian was stealing from my syndicates. The penalty in the underground is death. The High Council would have discovered it eventually. If you had married him, his crimes would have been your crimes. They would have executed you alongside him. I couldn't let that happen."
"So you ruined me instead!" Clara cried, tears of furious regret spilling down her cheeks. "You decided what was best for me! You broke me just so you could put me back together in your own image!"
"You were already broken, Clara!" Valerius shot back, his voice thick with desperate emotion. "You were dying inside that gilded cage! You were suffocating! Yes, I orchestrated the scandal. Yes, I forced his hand. Because I needed you to hate the society that was killing you. I needed you to fall so you could finally see that the dark is where you belong. With me."
He reached for her, his eyes pleading, entirely devoid of his usual arrogance. "I would burn the world to the ground before I let them extinguish your light. I did it because you are mine."
Clara looked at the monster. She saw the absolute, terrifying devotion in his eyes. He had ruined her to save her. It was twisted. It was demonic. It was monstrous.
And she hated him for it.
"I am not yours," Clara whispered, stepping around him. She grabbed the translated ledger from the floor. "I am not a pet for the High Council, and I am not a pet for a demon. I am taking this to the Council. I am going to clear my name. And I never want to see you again."
Valerius stood frozen. The Incubus, who fed on desire, looked as though he were starving to death in an instant. He did not raise a hand to stop her.
"If you go back to them, Clara," Valerius said, his voice a hollow, agonizing rasp, "they will not forgive you. They will only find a new cage."
Clara didn't answer. She ran from the library, ascending the stairs, and fled the Umbra Estate.
