Chapter 2

The Salt and the Sorrow

The air grew significantly colder as she descended, the refined scent of the palace gardens giving way to the raw, violent smell of salt, kelp, and ancient stone. Blackwood Cove was a crescent of obsidian sand, framed by towering, jagged rocks that blocked out the light of the palace above. It felt entirely divorced from the mortal world.
Elara stumbled off the final step, her satin slippers sinking into the wet, dark sand. She collapsed near the edge of the water, the pristine blue silk of her gown soaking up the freezing brine.
Here, in the absolute isolation of the dark, the dam finally broke.
Elara wept. It was not the delicate, silent crying of a Regency lady, but a raw, ugly, guttural sobbing that tore at her throat. She cried for her lost youth, for the love she had so desperately craved, and for the agonizing reality that her life would never be anything more than a decorative cage.
She buried her face in her hands, her tears falling freely into the surf washing over her knees.
As her tears met the ocean, the water began to change.
Elara gasped, lifting her head. The dark, frothing waves were suddenly illuminated from within. A brilliant, ethereal bioluminescence bloomed beneath the surface, painting the shore in a haunting, unnatural shade of azure. The light swirled and pulsed, as if the ocean itself were breathing.
The water parted.
He rose from the surf like a dark god carved from the abyss. Elara froze, her breath catching in her throat, her terror momentarily eclipsed by sheer, impossible awe.
He was breathtakingly beautiful, yet fundamentally terrifying. His skin was pale and flawless, glistening with seawater. His hair was the color of midnight, clinging to sharp, aristocratic cheekbones and a jawline that could cut glass. But it was his eyes that betrayed his inhumanity—they were completely black, edge to edge, resembling the deepest, most unfathomable trenches of the sea.
He moved toward her, his bare feet making no sound on the wet sand. He wore no clothes, only the dark, shifting shadows of the water that seemed to cling to his waist like a second skin.
Elara scrambled backward, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "Who... what are you?" she breathed, her voice trembling.
The creature knelt before her, entirely unbothered by the freezing waves crashing against his thighs. He reached out, his long, elegantly tapered fingers surprisingly warm as they gently cupped her tear-stained cheek.
"I am Caspian," he murmured. His voice was a physical sensation, a resonant, melodic vibration that hummed in her marrow and instantly soothed the frantic beating of her heart. It was the sound of a lullaby sung in a storm. "And you, sweet, broken thing, are weeping into my waters."
"I am the Crown Princess," Elara stammered, clinging desperately to her mortal authority, though it felt utterly useless here. "You must step back."
Caspian smiled. It was a devastating, beautiful expression that made her stomach flutter. "The ocean does not recognize crowns, Elara. It only recognizes the weight of a soul. And yours is drowning."
He leaned closer, his black eyes holding her captive. "I felt your sorrow from the depths. It tastes of betrayal and iron corsets. They keep you in a gilded cage above, but down here... down here, you are meant to be worshipped."
Before she could protest, Caspian leaned in and pressed his lips to the tear path on her cheek. The touch sent a jolt of pure, intoxicating electricity through her body. The humiliating memory of Julian and Beatrice vanished, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming wave of warmth and desire.
"Come back tomorrow night," Caspian whispered against her skin. "When the palace sleeps. I will show you what it feels like to be chosen."
He stepped backward, melting seamlessly into the bioluminescent waves until there was nothing left but the dark ocean and the lingering, hypnotic echo of his voice.
