Chapter 7

Liquid Gold and Shattered Glass

It was a pain unlike anything Harper had ever experienced. It wasn't physical; it was a deep, tearing agony in the very center of her chest.
The golden shackles glowed white-hot, but they didn't burn her skin. They burned her spirit. She felt her memories, her emotions, her life force being forcibly sucked out of her body, drawn upward into the glowing diamond. The stone pulsed brighter, the Estate feeding on her desperation.
Harper threw her head back, a raw scream tearing from her throat.
"Fascinating," Dorian muttered, stopping his chant momentarily to observe the runes. He frowned. "The conversion rate is... slow."
The Alternate Harper stepped forward, annoyance flashing across her face. "What is wrong with her? Why isn't it generating?"
Harper gasped for breath, her vision swimming with black spots. Through the agony, a sudden, sharp realization pierced her mind.
She wasn't magical.
She was a genetic match, yes. But she was born in a universe of concrete, rain, and unpaid bills. She had no innate magic in her blood. The altar was trying to siphon arcane energy from a dry well, ripping her soul apart in the process, but failing to convert it efficiently because she lacked the magical conductivity the Estate required.
Dorian realized it at the same time. His violet eyes widened in shock. "Her blood. It’s void. It’s causing a feedback loop in the runic matrix."
"Fix it!" the Alternate Harper shrieked.
Dorian lunged forward to adjust the bindings, but Harper didn't wait.
Her right hand was shackled to the stone, but her fingers could still move. Tucked tightly in her palm was the jagged shard of mirror glass. It was a piece of her world—a piece of non-magical, mundane reality.
With a scream of sheer, agonizing effort, Harper contorted her wrist, driving the sharp edge of the glass shard directly into the glowing, magical rune etched into the stone beside her hand.
The mundane glass pierced the arcane circuit.
The reaction was catastrophic.
The feedback loop Dorian had feared violently detonated. The golden runes on the altar turned a sickening, corrupt black. The golden shackles around Harper’s wrists and ankles shattered like brittle glass, the magical binding breaking.
A shockwave of concussive force exploded outward from the altar.
Dorian was thrown backward, crashing into the obsidian wall with a sickening crunch. The Alternate Harper screamed as the shockwave hit her, throwing her through the iron doors. The shadow-servants evaporated instantly, torn apart by the disrupted magic.
Harper rolled off the altar, hitting the floor hard. Her body felt hollowed out, incredibly weak, but she was free.
The Siphoning Vault was collapsing. The obsidian walls cracked, chunks of stone falling from the ceiling. The magical feedback was tearing the room apart.
Harper staggered to her feet. She looked up. The web of energy holding the core artifact had failed. The fist-sized, glowing diamond plummeted toward the floor.
Harper lunged, catching the massive gem against her chest before it could shatter on the stone. It was heavy, radiating a chaotic, terrifying warmth.
"Stop her!" Dorian roared, bleeding from a gash on his forehead, struggling to stand.
Harper didn't look back. She clutched the diamond and sprinted for the spiraling staircase. She ran with the last, desperate reserves of her adrenaline. She tore up the stairs, the sound of the Estate collapsing echoing behind her. The woven gold tapestries in the hallways were turning black and crumbling to dust. The bioluminescent gardens were dying.
She reached the grand foyer. Standing in the center of the room, vibrating with unstable energy, was the portal—a massive, swirling mirror of liquid silver, destabilized by the vault's destruction.
The Alternate Harper stumbled into the foyer, her crimson gown torn, her eyes wild with fury. "You ruined my home! You ruined everything!"
She raised her hands, a bolt of golden energy forming in her palms.
Harper clutched the diamond tight, lowered her shoulder, and dove directly into the swirling silver glass.
