Chapter 3
The Illusion Shatters
❧
The sharp, abrasive buzzing of a cell phone violently shattered the quiet intimacy of the room.
Kael jumped, the remaining tea sloshing over the rim of the mug. He fished the sleek smartphone out of his hoodie pocket. The screen illuminated his face with a harsh, blue light. "It's Marcus," he muttered, swiping to answer. "Yeah? Marcus, I'm already inside. Your guy got me into the back room."
Eli’s heart plummeted into his stomach. The bubble popped. Reality rushed back in with the force of a tidal wave.
Kael frowned, pressing the phone tighter to his ear. "What are you talking about? You're in the alley? I didn't see your car. Who the hell are you talking about, Marcus? I'm sitting right here with the driver you sent—"
Kael’s voice died in his throat. The idol slowly lowered the phone from his ear. The vulnerable, soft expression he had worn only seconds before vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute, terrified paranoia.
He stood up so quickly he knocked the coffee table, sending the chipped mug crashing to the linoleum floor.
"You're not the driver," Kael said. His voice was no longer warm; it was ice.
Eli took a step back, his hands flying up defensively. "I... I'm so sorry. I tried to tell you when you came in, but you were so panicked, and I didn't know how to stop you—"
"Who are you?" Kael demanded, his eyes darting frantically around the small room as if searching for hidden cameras. The paranoia of his fame was a feral, unpredictable thing. "Do you work for TMZ? Did you tip them off? Is that why you were waiting by the back door?"
"No! No, Kael, please," Eli pleaded, his voice trembling. "I'm just the night clerk. I was just shelving books. I swear to you, I didn't know who you were until you took the mask off."
"Liar," Kael spat, the betrayal twisting his handsome features into something cruel. His defensive instincts, honed by years of being used by everyone around him, took total control. "You sat there and let me spill my guts to you. What, were you trying to get a good quote? How much are they paying you for the exclusive story of my pathetic little breakdown, huh?"
The accusation felt like a physical slap. All of Eli's deep-seated insecurities flared to life, burning him from the inside out. He was foolish to think this beautiful, glowing idol had actually seen him. He was just plain, invisible Eli. Of course Kael would assume the worst; people like Kael didn't have genuine moments with people like Eli.
"I'm not selling anything," Eli said, his voice dropping to a broken whisper, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. "I just wanted to make sure you were safe."
Kael sneered, pulling his hood violently back over his head. "Right. Sure you did. You're nobody. Just keep your mouth shut."
Kael shoved past Eli, his shoulder hitting Eli’s chest hard enough to make him stumble. The idol ripped the breakroom door open and stormed out, disappearing back into the maze of bookshelves, leaving Eli standing alone amidst the shattered pieces of the ceramic mug and the ruins of his own foolish heart.
