Chapter 3
The Mirror and the Debt
❧
The turning point came when Elias was cleaning Alistair’s private chambers. The Arbiter was at a formal dinner with Lady Hesper, leaving his journals unattended.
Elias knew it was a crime. He knew the silver collar would pulse with heat if he committed an act of "theft," even the theft of information. But the curiosity was a fire in his blood. He opened the journal Alistair had been carrying in the greenhouse.
His breath stopped.
The pages were filled with sketches and genealogical charts. In the center was a portrait of a younger boy—Elias himself, before the hollows had formed in his cheeks. Beneath it was a copy of a betrothal contract dated ten years ago.
* Elias Thorne and Alistair Vane.*
Alistair knew. He had known since the moment he saw Elias scrubbing the ballroom floor. He wasn't just investigating the estate; he was looking for the boy he had been promised to before the Thorne family was dismantled by Lady Hesper’s legal sorcery.
"Looking for a way out, Elias?"
The voice was a lash. Elias spun around, the journal slipping from his fingers.
Lady Hesper stood in the doorway, her eyes glowing with an unholy green light. In her hand, she held a Black Mirror—an artifact used to store and project false karma.
"I saw the way the Arbiter looked at you in the garden," Hesper hissed, her face contorting into a mask of evil. "You think he will save you? You think a Vane would ever marry a mageless scullery boy?"
"He knows who I am," Elias said, his voice trembling but clear.
"He knows what I *allow* him to know," Hesper countered. She raised the mirror. "You have been a useful battery, Elias. But batteries eventually run dry. It is time for you to fulfill your final purpose."
She spoke a word of command, and the silver collar around Elias’s neck constricted. He fell to his knees, gasping, as the mirror began to glow. Hesper wasn't just taking his magic now; she was pouring the entire "Spiritual Rot" of the estate into the mirror, anchoring it to Elias’s soul.
"Tonight, there is a theft," Hesper smiled. "A theft of a sacred relic. And the Arbiter will find it in your hands, along with the blackest karma this house has ever produced."
