The Basil Incident

The rain in Neo-Veridia didn't wash the city clean; it just made the neon lights bleed across the pavement like watercolor paint.
Ezra sat in his armchair, a chipped mug of chamomile tea warming his hands. It was 2:00 AM. Outside, four stories down, sirens wailed—the lullaby of the metropolis. Up here, in apartment 4B, the air smelled of damp potting soil and old paperback books. It was a fortress of mediocrity, and Ezra had fought hard for it.
He wasn’t a hero. He wasn’t a villain. He was a barista who knew how to froth almond milk without burning it, and in a world obsessed with capes and laser vision, that was a superpower of its own.
* Thud.*
The noise didn’t come from the street. It came from the window.
Ezra lowered his book. He waited, hoping it was just a pigeon with bad navigation skills.
* Thump. Scrape.*
A hand slapped against the wet glass. It was gloved in black tactical material, the fingers leaving streaks of dark red slime—no, not slime. Blood.
Ezra sighed. He set his mug down on a coaster. "If this is another vigilante looking for a shortcut," he muttered to his fern, "I’m filing a noise complaint."
He walked to the window and unlatched it, shoving the sash up. The wind and rain lashed at his face, instantly soaking his pajama shirt.
Curled on the rusty metal of the fire escape was a figure clad in shredded black Kevlar. The stealth suit was ruined, slashed across the torso to reveal pale skin and fresh blood. The intruder was wheezing, clutching his side.
The figure looked up. A domino mask had been torn away, revealing sharp cheekbones and eyes that were currently dilated with pain.
Ezra froze. The rain seemed to stop, or maybe his heart did.
He knew those eyes. He knew the sneer that was trying to form on the man’s bloody lips.
"Julian," Ezra breathed.
Julian—or "Viper," as the news channels called him—coughed, a wet, hacking sound. He squinted against the light of the apartment. Recognition flickered in his gaze, followed immediately by a defensive, jagged shield of arrogance.
"Ezra," Julian rasped. His voice was a wreck. "Still... wearing flannel? Tragic."
He tried to shift his weight and groaned, the sound tearing out of him involuntarily. "Don't... don't call the cops, dweeb."
The nickname hit Ezra like a physical slap. It dragged him back ten years, to the hallways of Hero High, where Julian, the golden boy with the shadow manipulation quirk, had made it his personal mission to remind Ezra of his powerlessness. Julian used to trip him in the cafeteria, lock him in lockers, and whisper that *zeros* didn't belong with *heroes*.
Ezra looked down at the man who had haunted his teenage nightmares. Julian was shivering. He was bleeding out on a rusty grate in the pouring rain, hunted by gods knows who.
The power dynamic, for the first time in a decade, had shifted. Ezra was warm. Ezra was safe. Julian was dying.
Ezra could close the window. He could lock the latch and draw the curtains. It would be justice. It would be karma.
Julian’s head lolled forward, his forehead resting on the wet metal. He looked small.
Ezra cursed under his breath.
"Get in," Ezra commanded, his voice steady.
Julian blinked up at him, confused. "What?"
"Get in," Ezra repeated, stepping back and holding the window open wider. "Before you bleed on my basil plants. I just re-potted them."
