Chapter 5

The Wedding Vow

Elara was alone.
The silence of the Sunken Library was deafening. She scrambled to her feet, her head spinning. She was Solo. This was what she wanted, right? No liability. No one to worry about. She could run to the exit, get the faculty, save herself.
But the silence wasn't peaceful. It was empty. It was the sound of the West Wing dorm room at 3:00 AM. It was the sound of regret.
"Not this time," she growled.
She didn't run to the exit. She ran into the dark.
She tracked the spiritual turbulence. She vaulted over piles of screaming books, ignored the whispers tearing at her mind, and slid into the central rotunda.
Kaelen was floating in the center of the room, held aloft by the Sponsa Umbra. The entity had fully manifested—a skeletal giant in tattered wedding finery. It was draining him. Kaelen’s skin was translucent, his life force streaming out like white smoke.
Silas watched from the balcony. "It’s over, Vance. He’s rejected. He dies alone."
Elara looked at the entity. It wanted a bride. It wanted a union.
She looked at Kaelen. He was barely conscious, his eyes rolling back.
Elara didn't use a spell. She didn't use salt. She sprinted across the room, jumped off a stack of encyclopedias, and tackled the floating pair.
She grabbed Kaelen’s face with both hands.
"Wake up, President!" she screamed.
Kaelen’s eyes fluttered open. "Elara... run..."
"Shut up," she said.
The sixty seconds of the Nullifier stone expired. The bond slammed back into existence, reacting to their physical contact with the force of a freight train. The ring on her finger flared black.
The Horror shrieked, confused. It sensed the bond. It sensed the connection. But it still tried to feed.
* Prove it,* the voice hissed in her head. *Prove the union.*
Elara looked at Kaelen. She saw the arrogance, yes, but also the loneliness. The duty. The boy who stood in the mud to save his school.
She didn't just accept the bond to save a client. She accepted *him*.
Elara kissed him.
It wasn't a tentative, movie-screen kiss. It was desperate, fierce, and terrified. She poured every ounce of her stubborn, solitary will into the connection. She pushed her magic into him, using the bond not as a leash, but as a conduit.
* I am not leaving,* she projected into the curse. *He is not alone. I am here.*
The "fake" engagement burned away. In its place, something real and terrifyingly powerful took hold. The magic turned gold.
The Sponsa Umbra recoiled. It fed on isolation. It choked on genuine unity.
"No!" Silas screamed from the balcony.
Elara broke the kiss but kept her forehead pressed against Kaelen’s. "Burn it," she whispered.
Kaelen’s eyes glowed with renewed power. He wasn't just the Warden anymore; he was the husband of the storm. He raised his hand, interlacing his fingers with Elara’s.
Together, they channeled the backlash. A shockwave of pure, golden light erupted from their joined hands.
It hit the Horror, dissolving it instantly into harmless ash. The force of the blast continued upward, smashing Silas off the balcony and pinning him against the ceiling in a cage of light.
The library went silent. Not the silence of a tomb, but the silence of peace.
Elara and Kaelen floated down to the floor. They were still holding hands.
