Chapter 3

The Gilded Cage

Three days in the Tower was enough to make Elara miss the drafty West Wing.
Living with Kaelen Thorne was an exercise in frustration. He was meticulously neat; she was chaotic. He listened to classical vinyls; she liked silence. He slept on the left side of the massive king-sized bed; she slept on the right, with a wall of pillows built between them like a fortress.
But the real problem was the silence. Not the quiet of the room, but the secrets he kept.
"Who sent the curse?" Elara asked on the third night. They were sitting at the long dining table, books spread out between them. Kaelen was reviewing Council budgets; Elara was reading a dusty tome on spectral law.
"I told you, it’s an ancestral enemy," Kaelen said without looking up.
"Ancestors don't have access to the current campus warding grids," Elara countered. She tapped a map of the school. "To summon a Sponsa Umbra inside the barrier, the summoner had to be *inside* the Council Tower."
Kaelen’s pen stopped moving.
"You’re protecting someone," Elara said. "Or you’re too scared to look."
"I am not scared," Kaelen said, his voice low. "I am tired, Elara. There is a difference."
"Then let me do my job. I’m a hunter. You’re the prey. Tell me who has access."
Kaelen sighed, rubbing his temples. "The Council is composed of four members. Me. The Treasurer. The Secretary. And the Vice President, Silas Vane."
"Silas," Elara mused. "The guy who smiles too much and always wears gloves?"
"Silas is my oldest friend," Kaelen said defensively. "He’s been helping me research the seals."
"Or looking for weak points," Elara muttered. She stood up. "I’m going to the library. The restricted section."
"We," Kaelen corrected, standing up. " *We* are going to the library."
They walked across the dark campus under an umbrella. The bond had settled into a dull ache, a constant reminder of their leash.
"Why do you work solo?" Kaelen asked suddenly. The rain drummed against the fabric of the umbrella.
Elara stiffened. "Why do you care?"
"Because you fight like you expect no one to have your back. It’s... inefficient."
Elara looked at the wet cobblestones. "My freshman year. I took a partner. We hunted a poltergeist in the dorms. I got cocky. I missed a tell. The poltergeist threw him down an elevator shaft. He lived, but he walks with a cane now. He dropped out."
She looked at Kaelen. "People get hurt when they stand next to me, Thorne. You’re just the latest in the line."
Kaelen stopped walking. He turned her to face him. The proximity warmed the bond, soothing the ache in her chest.
"I’m already cursed, Elara," he said softly. "You can't break what’s already broken. You don't have to protect me from yourself."
For a moment, in the rain, the "fake" engagement felt dangerously real. Elara felt a flutter in her stomach that had nothing to do with magic.
"Let's just find the book," she whispered.
