Chapter 6

The Queen of Silence

The Spire was falling apart.
Gravity was gone. The hallways were twisting like snakes. The library was floating in a debris field.
Syzygy sat on his throne—which was now hovering upside down—watching the Heroes advance.
Captain Apex and his team of "Lightbringers" were blasting their way through the shadow demons. They fired lasers of concentrated holy energy. They laughed as they broke things.
"Come out, Monster!" Apex shouted, kicking over a vase Vesper had liked. "We know you're weak!"
Syzygy didn't move. He was unraveling. His suit was gone, replaced by swirling vapor. He could feel his consciousness slipping away, dissolving into the white noise of the universe.
* Let them come,* he thought. *Let them end it.*
"Hey! spandex-for-brains!"
The shout echoed through the crumbling hall.
Apex turned. Syzygy turned.
Vesper stood in the archway. She was wearing a trench coat she had stolen and holding a megaphone.
"You broke my vase," Vesper said, her voice amplified to a deafening volume. "That was Ming Dynasty, you uncultured swine!"
"A human?" Apex sneered. "Get out of the way, girl. We're here for the loot."
"You're trespassing," Vesper said, walking forward. The floor beneath her formed from the sheer force of her will. She didn't need magic. She had *presence*. "This is private property."
"Kill her," Apex ordered his team.
A mage fired a bolt of fire at Vesper.
Vesper didn't dodge. She just rolled her eyes. "Oh, please. I lived with a supernova. Your little sparkler is pathetic."
She walked *through* the fire. It washed over her and fizzled out. Her cynicism was a shield. She didn't believe in their magic, so it couldn't hurt her. She was the immovable object.
She marched right up to Captain Apex. He towered over her, glowing with power.
"I am the Hero of Light!" he roared.
"And I," Vesper said, "am the lady who organized the Necronomicon. Move."
She kicked him in the shin. Hard.
Apex yelped, hopping on one foot. Vesper used the distraction to shove him backward into a gravity well. He screamed as he fell toward the ceiling.
"Retreat!" the mage yelled. "She’s crazy!"
The heroes fled. They could fight monsters. They couldn't fight a woman who treated the apocalypse like a customer service dispute.
Vesper turned to Syzygy.
He was barely there. A wisp of smoke. A fading star.
"You came back," the wisp whispered.
"You tried to ghost me," Vesper said, tears stinging her eyes. "After I fixed your feng shui. The audacity."
She reached into the smoke. She grabbed where his face used to be.
"I am a void, Syzygy," she said. "And you are a void. Two negatives make a positive. Basic math."
"I... cannot hold form," he rasped. "I need... an anchor."
"Then anchor to me, you idiot."
Vesper pulled the smoke down and kissed him.
It wasn't a kiss of flesh. It was a collision of souls. She poured everything she had into him—her spite, her stubbornness, her absolute refusal to be erased. She offered herself not as a meal, but as a mold.
* Fill the space,* she thought. *I am the cup. You are the water.*
The smoke swirled. It condensed. It hardened.
The static turned solid. The suit reformed. The face—still faceless, but distinctly *him*—stabilized.
Syzygy gasped, a sound like a universe being born. He wrapped his solid arms around her, lifting her off the ground.
"You are heavy," he whispered reverently. "You are so wonderfully heavy."
"And you," Vesper sniffed, wiping her nose on his lapel, "are late for dinner."
