Chapter 6
The Final Variable
❧
The Observation Deck was a platform of glass extending over the abyss of the Great Breach. Below, the Void swirled, a maelstrom of nothingness that ate light.
The entire faculty was there, robed in black ceremonial garb. The graduating class stood in rows, watching.
Elara was knelt at the edge of the platform. She was groggy, the dampeners humming loudly, suppressing her power.
Dean Silas stood at the podium.
"Today," Silas boomed, "we offer this tribute to the Eternal Hunger. By her sacrifice, St. Hestia’s stands for another year. By her chaos, we purchase order!"
The crowd murmured the responses. It was a cult disguised as a college.
Valerian stood in the front row of the students. He checked his watch.
"Inefficient," Valerian said loudly.
The Dean paused. "Mr. Cross?"
Valerian stepped out of the line. He walked toward the podium.
"Feeding the Breach is a temporary solution," Valerian announced, his voice carrying over the wind. "It’s a linear equation. Variable X goes in, stability Y comes out. But eventually, X runs out."
"Sit down, Cross!" Silas hissed. "You're ruining the ritual!"
"I'm optimizing it," Valerian said. He pulled a small remote detonator from his pocket. "Why feed the Void... when you can weaponize it?"
He pressed the button.
On the edge of the platform, the green light on Elara’s cuff turned red.
* Click.*
The dampeners on her wrists didn't just unlock. They shattered. The internal mechanism Valerian had installed—a Void-Inversion Drive—kicked in.
Elara woke up.
She didn't scream. She inhaled.
The massive, swirling vortex of the Breach below seemed to pause. Then, it funneled upward.
Instead of Elara falling into the Void, the Void fell into *her*.
She stood up, the lead manacles dissolving into dust. Her eyes were twin black holes. Her hair turned into writhing smoke.
"Valerian?" Silas shrieked. "What have you done?"
"I removed the governor," Valerian said calmly. He pointed at the faculty. "Elara. Target acquired."
Elara turned. She smiled, and her mouth was full of stars.
She raised her hand.
A wave of absolute darkness swept across the Observation Deck. It didn't burn; it erased. The podium vanished. The Dean vanished mid-scream. The Enforcers fired their wands, but their magic was eaten by the air itself.
The students screamed and fled back toward the safety of the main campus.
Valerian stood his ground. The darkness washed over him like a tide. It tore the tiles from the floor. It ate the glass walls.
But it parted around him.
Elara floated in the center of the storm, an avatar of destruction. She was beautiful. She was terrifying. She was the most perfect equation he had ever seen.
She drifted down until she was hovering inches from his face. The air crackled with entropy.
"I could eat you," she whispered. Her voice sounded like a thousand voices speaking in unison. "I am everything now."
Valerian adjusted his glasses. He looked into the abyss of her eyes and saw himself reflected there.
"You could," Valerian agreed. "But who else can do the math for you?"
Elara paused. The swirling chaos slowed.
She blinked, and the stars in her eyes faded back to electric violet. She dropped to the ground, stumbling slightly.
Valerian caught her.
"Did I get them?" she asked, her voice returning to its normal, scratchy human tone.
Valerian looked around. The Observation Deck was gone. The faculty was gone. The Breach was calm, sated by the energy she had looped back into it.
"You got them all," Valerian said.
