The Event Horizon

Weeks bled into months. The lab became their universe.
They fell into a rhythm. A toxic, dangerous, exhilarating rhythm.
They worked eighteen-hour days. Valerian built a containment gauntlet—a sleek cuff of brass and mana-glass designed to focus Elara’s output. Elara tested it by blasting targets in the reinforced testing chamber.
It wasn't just work. It was an interrogation of reality.
"Why doesn't the screaming stop?" Elara asked one night at 3:00 AM. She was lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling. "The Void... it never stops screaming."
Valerian was at his desk, calculating load bearings. "It’s not screaming, Elara. It’s feedback. The universe trying to fill a vacuum. It’s just noise."
"It tells me to eat you," she said casually.
Valerian paused. He swiveled his chair around. "And?"
"And I don't want to." She rolled over, looking at him. Her hair was spread out like a halo of ink. "You taste like chalk and arrogance. It would be dry."
"Flattering," Valerian deadpanned.
He walked over to her. He knelt on the floor. He wasn't afraid of her anymore. He knew her triggers. He knew the exact frequency of her madness.
"Give me your arm," he said.
She extended her left arm. The skin was hot to the touch. The brass cuff was glowing.
"The seal is overheating," Valerian murmured, touching the metal. It burned his fingertips, but he didn't pull away. "You're pushing too hard."
"I like the push," she whispered. Her eyes drifted shut. "It feels... real. When I push, I’m not just a glitch. I’m a force."
"You are a force," Valerian agreed. "But if you burn out the conduit, the experiment ends."
He adjusted a screw on the cuff. His fingers brushed the sensitive skin of her inner wrist.
Elara shuddered. A wave of mana pulsed from her skin—not violent, but heavy. Possessive.
"Val," she breathed.
The air in the room warped. A micro-rift opened above them—a tear in space no bigger than a coin, but sucking air with the force of a hurricane.
"Stability breach!" Valerian shouted. "Elara, dial it back!"
"I can't!" Her eyes snapped open, glowing white. "It’s pulling me!"
The rift widened. Gravity distorted. Papers flew off the desk.
Valerian didn't run for the emergency shut-off. That would take too long.
He grabbed Elara’s hand.
He shoved his own hand *into* her aura, past the burning shield of entropy she unconsciously projected. His skin blistered. The sleeves of his coat disintegrated.
"Look at me!" Valerian roared, forcing her face toward his. "Focus on the math! The rift is a variable! You are the constant! Be the constant!"
Elara stared at him. She saw the pain in his eyes, but she also saw the absolute, unyielding conviction. He wasn't leaving. He was burning with her.
She screamed—a sound of pure frustration—and clamped down on the power.
The rift snapped shut with a thunderclap.
Silence rushed back into the room.
Valerian slumped back, panting. His hand was red and raw.
Elara scrambled up, grabbing his injured hand. "You idiot! You stupid, arrogant genius! You could have lost your arm!"
"Calculated risk," Valerian wheezed, leaning his head back against the desk. "Statistically, you were more likely to close it if I provided a tactile anchor."
Elara stared at his burned hand. She brought it to her lips, blowing cool, void-laced breath onto the skin. The pain receded instantly, replaced by a numbing cold.
"You're crazier than I am," she whispered.
"I'm dedicated to the data," Valerian said softly. He looked at her. "And the data says you're worth the damage."
For a moment, the Void didn't scream. It just hummed, quiet and content.
