The Exp of Grief

They were cornered in the Throne Room.
The massive oak doors were barred, but the wood was groaning under the rhythmic assault of a battering ram. *BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.*
Valian cowered behind the overturned throne. He was hyperventilating. "Elara, use your Ultimate. You have that radiant slash, right? The one you used in the tournament?"
Elara stood before the doors, her chest heaving. She could barely lift her sword. "That takes stamina, Valian," she spat, blood flecking her lips. "I spent it all keeping you alive in the corridor."
"But the cooldown—"
"There are no cooldowns!" she screamed, turning to look at him. Her eyes were wild, filled with tears. "This is life! We die when we die!"
The doors splintered. Wood exploded inward.
Through the dust stepped the Warlord. He was seven feet tall, clad in armor made of black dragon scales. He held a mace that was crusted with the hair and blood of the Royal Guard.
**[BOSS IDENTIFIED: GORLAK THE WORLD-EATER]**
**[Level: ???]**
**[Chance of Survival: 0%]**
Valian froze. The interface flashed red, a strobe light of failure.
The Warlord didn't monologue. He didn't ask for surrender. He simply stepped over the debris and raised the mace.
"Wait!" Valian stood up. His legs shook violently. He tried to summon the arrogance he had worn like a cloak for eighteen years. "I... I am Prince Valian! I am the reincarnation of the Star God! If you strike me down, you will trigger the—"
The Warlord grunted and swung.
It wasn't aimed at Valian.
Elara moved. She didn't use a skill. She didn't shout a battle cry. She simply threw her body into the path of the swing.
She was a Level 20 Knight against an endgame boss. The math was cruel.
There was a sickening, wet crunch. The impact lifted Elara off her feet and slammed her into the stone pillar beside the throne. She slid down, her chest cavity caved in, her sword clattering uselessly to the floor.
"Elara?" Valian whispered.
The world seemed to stop. The Warlord paused, adjusting his grip on the mace, preparing for the second swing to finish the job.
Valian fell to his knees beside her. Her blue eyes, usually so sharp and full of life, were glazing over. She looked at him one last time.
"Run..." she wheezed, blood bubbling past her lips. "Idiot..."
She went still.
Valian stared at her. He waited. He waited for the phoenix down. He waited for the cleric to rush in. He waited for her to respawn at the checkpoint.
She grew cold.
Something inside Valian snapped. It wasn't a heroic resolve. It was a fracture in his psyche, a total collapse of the denial he had lived in.
**[SYSTEM ALERT]**
**[Trauma Threshold Exceeded.]**
**[Condition Met: The Sacrifice of the Bonded.]**
**[Unlocking Hidden Trait: BERSERKER'S GRIEF.]**
A sound like a jet engine roared in Valian’s ears.
**[XP CACHE UNLOCKED.]**
**[Processing... Level 5 -> Level 10 -> Level 50 -> Level 99.]**
Golden light erupted from Valian’s skin. It was blinding, searing, hot enough to melt the gold leaf off the throne. The air pressure in the room spiked, cracking the stone floor.
The Warlord took a step back, shielding his eyes. For the first time, the monster knew fear.
Valian stood up. He didn't feel strong. He didn't feel triumphant. He felt like he was burning alive. He looked at the Warlord, but he didn't see an enemy. He saw the reason Elara wasn't breathing.
"Die," Valian said.
He didn't use a fancy spell name. He simply extended his hand.
A torrent of pure, unrefined magic blasted outward. It vaporized the Warlord instantly. It didn't stop there. The beam tore through the castle walls, through the invading army outside, through the mountains on the horizon. It carved a scar into the face of the world.
**[ENEMY DEFEATED. +5,000,000 XP]**
**[LEVEL CAP REACHED.]**
The light faded. The dust settled.
The Throne Room was silent. The invasion was over. The Northern Hordes were ash.
Valian stood in the center of the ruin, his body humming with the power of a god. He had mana enough to reshape continents. He had strength enough to crush mountains.
He turned slowly to the broken body slumped against the pillar.
"Elara?" he asked, his voice cracking. "I did it. I leveled up. Look."
He reached out, his hand glowing with healing magic. He poured enough life energy into her to resurrect an army.
But the System window remained grey.
**[TARGET STATUS: DECEASED.]**
**[Soul not found.]**
Valian dropped his hand. He sat down in the blood and ash, the strongest being in the entire world.
"I accepted the quest," he whispered to the silence. "I'm ready to play now. Elara? I'm ready to train."
No one answered. The game was over. He had won.
And he had lost everything.
