The Gilded Cage

The water bottle in my hand was chilled to exactly forty degrees. It was alkaline, infused with electrolytes, and cost more than the average citizen of Neo-Vegas earned in a week.
I stood in the corner of the VIP dressing room, blending into the sterile white walls, watching the chaos of celebrity unfold.
"Julian, move. You're blocking the light ring."
The voice belonged to Marcus, Seraphina’s manager. He was a weasel of a man in a synth-silk suit that shimmered with tacky, low-grade illusion magic. He didn't look at me when he spoke; he simply waved a hand as if shooing away a fly.
I didn't move immediately. In my previous life, a gesture of such disrespect would have resulted in the offender losing that hand. But I wasn't Kael the Sword Saint, Scourge of the Ten Hells, anymore. I was Julian Vance. Unemployed. Mana-less. The "useless son-in-law" of the Sterling family.
I stepped aside, my expression placid. "My apologies."
Marcus sneered, turning back to the makeup artists swarming the woman in the center of the room. "Honestly, Seraphina, I don't know why we bring him. He’s a glorified coat rack."
The room went quiet. The stylists paused their brushes.
Seraphina Sterling sat before the vanity, her eyes closed. She was undeniably beautiful—silver hair that seemed to generate its own light, skin like porcelain, and an aura of raw, albeit chaotic, magical power that hummed in the air. She opened her eyes, looking at Marcus in the mirror.
"He’s my husband, Marcus," she said. Her voice was melodic, trained for stadiums, but currently edged with ice. "Leave him be."
"I'm just saying, the optics—"
"Enough." Seraphina stood up. The sheer pressure of her mana flared, cracking the surface of the vanity table. The stylists scrambled back. She took a breath, reining it in, and turned to me.
Her eyes were tired. Beneath the layers of foundation and the glamour spells, she looked exhausted. Being the city's beloved Idol Mage was a heavy crown.
"Julian," she said, her voice softening just a fraction. She took the water bottle from my hand. "Just... stay out of sight tonight, okay? The sponsors are already on edge about the security threats."
"Security threats?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Standard death threats from rival guilds," she dismissed, taking a sip. "Don't worry. The venue security is top-tier. Just wait here and don't cause trouble."
I nodded, a small, amused smile touching my lips. "As you wish."
She didn't see the irony. She couldn't. She walked out the door, surrounded by her entourage, marching toward the roar of fifty thousand fans.
I remained in the silence of the dressing room. I closed my eyes and expanded my senses, pushing past the physical limitations of Julian’s weak body. I ignored the noise of the crowd, the thrum of the stadium’s bass, and the static of the local mana grid.
I searched for *Qi*.
It was faint in this world, drowned out by technology and crude magic, but it was there. And right now, it was reacting to something.
There was a killing intent in the stadium. It wasn't the clumsy anger of a rival guild or a stalker fan. It was ancient, hungry, and cold. I recognized the signature.
A Void Beast.
I opened my eyes and adjusted the lapels of my cheap suit.
"Top-tier security," I chuckled to myself. "Let's see about that."
