Chapter 3

The Seduction of Memory

It started slowly. A purchase of herbs. A conversation about the magical properties of moonlight on water. A "chance" meeting at the market.
Caspian played the role perfectly. He was the mysterious, wealthy traveler with a tragic past. He didn't push. He didn't pursue. He simply existed in her orbit, shining brighter than her baker ever could.
He manipulated the environment. A flick of his finger caused the baker’s delivery boat to spring a leak, making him late for a date. A subtle hex soured the yeast in the bakery, making the baker irritable and tired.
Meanwhile, Caspian was there. He took Lyra on a gondola ride through the secret canals of the sunken city, showing her illusions of galaxies and nebulae reflected in the water. He brought her flowers from extinct worlds. He fed her ambition.
"You’re powerful, Lyra," he told her one night, as they sat on the roof of her shop. "You’re wasting your talent making sleeping draughts for fishermen."
"I like my life," Lyra said defensively, though he heard the wobble in her voice. "It’s safe."
"Safety is a cage," Caspian murmured. "Don't you want to fly?"
He offered her his hand. He levitated them both, hovering a few feet above the tiles.
Lyra gasped, clutching his arm. Her face was flushed, her eyes wide with wonder.
"How?" she breathed.
"I can teach you," Caspian promised. "I can show you worlds where the sky is violet. I can show you the source of all magic."
Lyra looked at him. The baker was forgotten. The simple life was fading.
But as they grew closer, the cracks began to show.
It started with the headaches. Lyra would wince, rubbing her temples.
"It’s strange," she said one evening, as they walked along the quay. "I feel... déjà vu. Like we’ve had this conversation before."
"We haven't," Caspian said quickly.
"I had a nightmare last night," Lyra confessed. She stopped walking, looking down at the dark water. "I dreamt I was standing in the rain. I was crying. And you... you were laughing at me. You told me I was nothing."
Caspian froze. The blood drained from his face.
"That wasn't me," he said hoarsely.
"It felt so real," Lyra whispered, shivering. "I felt my heart breaking. Physically breaking. Like it was being torn in half."
She looked up at him, her eyes searching his face. "Why do I feel like I know you, Caspian? Why do I feel like I’ve lost you already?"
Caspian reached out and cupped her face. His hand trembled. The timeline was bleeding. The trauma of Prime Lyra was seeping into Sector 4 Lyra through the proximity of his soul.
"You haven't lost me," Caspian said fiercely. "I am right here. I am never leaving you again."
He leaned in.
He knew he shouldn't. He knew the baker was waiting for her. He knew that kissing her would seal the bond, turning the potential into the kinetic.
But he was selfish. He was a playboy who wanted the prize. He was a man drowning in guilt who needed a life raft.
He kissed her.
