Chapter 6
The Memory of Tomorrow
❧
She kissed him.
It wasn't just a kiss. Linnea ignited her own Golden Core. She reversed the flow of her cultivation, pouring her spiritual essence into him.
But with the energy, she sent the memories.
* FLASH.*
Kai gasped against her lips.
He saw.
He saw himself, ten years older, sitting on a throne of black iron. He saw the world in ashes. He saw Linnea, scarred and weary, standing by his side, the only person who hadn't abandoned him.
He saw the moment of his death—the older Kai dying in Linnea’s arms, whispering, *“Go back. Fix me. Save me from myself.”*
He felt Linnea’s grief. He felt the weight of her love—a love that had crossed time and death.
He saw that the "wandering master" wasn't a rival. It was a warning.
The connection broke.
Kai staggered back, gasping for air. The red glow in his eyes faded, replaced by wide, horrified black. The black veins on his neck receded.
He looked at his hands. Then he looked at Linnea.
"Me?" he whispered. "It was me?"
Linnea slumped against the tree, exhausted. "It was always you, Kai. I didn't want you to become him. But I made you jealous of yourself."
Kai stood there, processing the impossible. The jealousy that had been eating him alive evaporated, replaced by a crushing wave of humility. And... awe.
She had traveled through time for him. She loved the monster, but she fought for the boy.
"I..." Kai started. He looked at the lake, where the Shadow had vanished. "I was fighting my own ghost."
He laughed. It was a shaky, incredulous sound.
"I was jealous of a dead man. I thought I wasn't good enough for you."
He walked back to her. He moved tentatively, like he was afraid she would disappear.
"You saw the worst version of me," Kai said softly. "And you still came back."
"I came back because I knew you could be better," Linnea said. She reached out and took his hand. "Are you back with me?"
Kai squeezed her hand. His grip was firm, grounding. The chaotic Qi was gone, settled into a calm, powerful river.
"I am here," Kai promised.
