The Breath of the Past

Death tasted like ash. It was a dry, choking sensation that lingered in the back of the throat, the final flavor of a Golden Core shattering under the weight of too much ambition and too little soul.
Then, there was sunlight.
Zoya gasped, her body jerking upright. The movement was violent, a spasm of nerves expecting the strike of a executioner’s blade. Instead, her hand hit a soft, familiar quilt.
She blinked, her vision blurring. The room was small, smelling of dried lavender and old pine. Sunlight streamed through the circular window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. On the wall hung a mirror with a cracked frame, and next to it, a calendar marked with the crest of the Silver-Lotus Sect.
Zoya scrambled out of bed. Her legs felt light—too light. They lacked the heavy, grounded power of an Empress. She stumbled to the mirror.
The face staring back wasn't the scarred, icy visage of the thirty-year-old tyrant she had become. It was a girl of seventeen. Her skin was unblemished, her eyes wide and dark, her hair tied back in a messy braid. She wore the slate-grey robes of an Outer Disciple.
"No," Zoya whispered. Her voice was higher, softer.
She pressed a hand to her lower abdomen, searching for her Dantian—the spiritual center of a cultivator. In her previous life, it had been a roaring ocean of violet Qi. Now, it was a shallow puddle. Foundation Stage. The very bottom of the ladder.
She grabbed the calendar. The date was circled in red ink: *Ascending Dragon Tournament – One Month.*
The paper crinkled under her grip. Tears, hot and stinging, welled in her eyes. It wasn't a dream. It was a second chance.
"Kael," she breathed.
In her past life, Kael had been the brightest star of the Silver-Lotus Academy. The boy with the lightning affinity and the crooked smile. The boy who had confessed to her under the Spirit Tree three days before the tournament. And the boy she had ignored, focused only on her own training.
She remembered the tournament. She remembered the "accident." Kael’s Qi going berserk, his body tearing itself apart in the arena while the crowd screamed. She had stood there, frozen, watching him die. His death had been the catalyst for her coldness, pushing her to sever all emotional ties to reach the peak of immortality.
It hadn't been worth it.
Zoya clenched her fist. The shallow puddle of Qi in her gut rippled with her intent. It was weak, pathetic compared to what she was used to, but it was hers.
"Not this time," she vowed to the empty room. "This time, I burn the world down before I let him fall."
She didn't bother with breakfast. She threw on her boots, grabbed her training sword—a dull, mass-produced iron blade—and sprinted out of the dorms. The Silver-Lotus Sect was a marvel of architecture, built upon floating islands chained together by massive iron links. Below, the clouds drifted lazily; above, the peaks of the Elders’ mountains pierced the stratosphere.
Zoya didn't look at the view. She ran toward the Spirit Archives. She remembered the investigation from her past life, the one she had conducted years too late. Kael hadn't just lost control. He had been sabotaged. Someone had tampered with his cultivation technique, introducing a flaw that would rupture under the stress of the tournament.
She had to find him. She had to stop him from practicing today.
