The Arch-Judge

"One..."
"Halt!"
The command hit them like a physical blow. The air pressure dropped instantly, slamming Lyra to her knees.
Descending from the clouds above was the Arch-Judge. He was a being of pure white fire, barely maintaining a humanoid shape. Behind him were a dozen Dominions, spears leveled.
"Orien of the Third Circle," the Judge’s voice boomed, vibrating the very clouds they stood on. "You attempt to traffic a defect out of the Holy City. This is treason."
Orien drew his sword, standing over Lyra. "She is not a defect. She is a soul."
"She is a mistake!" The Judge raised a hand. "And you are broken."
Beams of light shot from the Dominions' spears. Orien deflected the first three with his wings, the metal feathers sparking. But there were too many.
Two spears of hard light slammed into Orien’s shoulders, pinning him to the cloud-floor. He roared in pain—a raw, ugly sound that tore at Lyra’s heart.
"Orien!" Lyra screamed—but no sound came out. She scrambled toward him, but a wall of force threw her back.
The Arch-Judge landed before her. He towered over her, radiating heat.
"You have corrupted a Sentinel," the Judge said, his voice cold. "But the Chorale is merciful. Return to your Ward, Scribe. Accept your dissolution. And I will allow Orien to be rebooted. His memories will be wiped, but he will exist."
Lyra looked at Orien. He was pinned, bleeding golden ichor onto the white cloud. His eyes were locked on hers.
"No," Orien gritted out through clenched teeth. "Don't... don't go back, Lyra. Jump. Jump without me."
"If she jumps, she dies," the Judge said. "Without a protector, the fall will shatter her. Choose, Defect. His mind, or your life."
Lyra looked at the edge. Then she looked at the Judge.
The Judge was perfect. He was a song of absolute order. He could not be fought with swords. He could only be fought with the one thing the city couldn't understand.
