Chapter 2
The Weight of Wings
❧
The Chorale was a labyrinth of light. The walls were made of polished pearl, reflecting the perpetual golden glow of the nebula above. To move through it was to walk inside a diamond.
They moved during the Great Hymn. This was the hour when every angel in the city, from the lowest polisher to the highest Seraph, turned their faces toward the Spire to sing the sustaining note of the city.
The sound was deafening. It was a beautiful, terrifying wall of noise—a single, perfect A-major chord that vibrated in the marrow of Lyra’s bones.
Orien moved through the side corridors, pulling Lyra along. She stumbled, her simple gray robes catching on the pristine floor. She was terrified. If a single singer turned their head, if a single note faltered, they would be seen.
"Stay close," Orien murmured. His voice was lost in the Hymn, but she felt the vibration of it against her shoulder.
They reached the Plaza of Reflection. It was a vast, open space that they had to cross to reach the outer districts. Patrols of Dominions—angels with four wings and no faces—hovered above, scanning for discord.
"We cannot cross," Lyra signed frantically. "They will see my gray robes. They will know I am Dissonant."
Orien looked at the sky, then at her. He unclasped his heavy silver cloak and let it drop to the floor.
"Come here," he said.
He knelt on one knee. He extended his wings. They were immense, spanning twelve feet from tip to tip. The feathers were not soft; they were hard and sharp like steel blades, designed for war and aerodynamics.
"Under," he commanded softly.
Lyra hesitated, then stepped into the embrace of his wings.
Orien folded them around her.
It was dark inside. It smelled of feathers and clean sky. She was pressed against the cold metal of his chest plate. She could hear his core—not a heart, but a rhythmic pulsing of light—beating fast.
"Hold onto me," Orien whispered. "Do not let go."
He stood up. From the outside, he looked like a Sentinel standing vigil, his wings wrapped tight around his body in a posture of prayer. But inside the cocoon, Lyra was wrapped in his protection.
He began to walk.
Lyra wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his tunic. She could feel the tension in his muscles. Every step he took was a deception. He walked right through the center of the Plaza.
"Sentinel," a voice boomed from above. A Dominion.
Orien stopped. Lyra stopped breathing.
"You are not singing," the Dominion accused. The voice sounded like scraping metal.
"My throat was damaged in the suppression of a void-beast," Orien lied. His voice was calm, steady. "I go to the Well of Healing."
There was a pause. The Hymn swelled around them.
"Go," the Dominion said. "Silence is a blight. Repair yourself."
Orien walked on.
Inside the dark, safe tent of his wings, Lyra pressed a kiss to the metal over his heart. She felt him shudder, a tiny disruption in his stride.
"Almost there," he whispered, his voice thick with an emotion she had never heard in the Chorale. "Almost safe."
