Chapter 4
The Eclipse
❧
They were five steps from the solid earth of the free lands. Just five steps.
Kael collapsed forward, dragging Elara down with him. The bridge remained rock solid, a testament to the fatal perfection of their union.
Elara scrambled to her knees, grabbing his face. His skin was cracking like porcelain, fissures of pure darkness spreading across his cheeks. "Kael, please. Just stop. We can go back. We can stop the magic."
He looked at her, and she saw the truth. He was the vessel, and she had poured the ocean into a cup. The cup was breaking.
"You have to cross," Kael whispered. His voice sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well. "Elara. You have to cross now."
"Not without you."
"I can't go there," he said. He looked down at his hands—their hands—still fused together. "If I hold on... I'll explode. And I'll take you with me."
"Then we explode!" Elara sobbed, the heat radiating from her now blinding, white-hot, uncontrollable. "I’m not leaving you!"
Kael shook his head slowly. "You were never the monster, El. You were just... too bright."
He didn't let go. He didn't push her away. Instead, he did the only thing a Void-Walker could do to save a Sun.
He opened the gates.
He stopped regulating the absorption. He dropped every internal barrier he had built over nineteen years of training. He became a true singularity.
"NO!" Elara screamed.
The sensation was instantaneous. Every ounce of excess heat, every dangerous flicker of radiation, every volt of lethal power inside Elara was ripped out of her in a single, violent second. It didn't hurt her. In fact, it was the first moment of total physical peace she had ever known. She felt cool. She felt stable.
But the boy in front of her screamed.
It was a sound that shattered the air. Kael arched back, his body glowing with a paradox of black light. He absorbed the toxicity of her power so completely that his physical form could no longer hold its shape.
"Kael!"
He looked at her one last time, his features dissolving into smoke. "Run."
With a final, sickening *thump* of displaced air, Kael imploded.
He didn't die; he simply ceased to exist as matter. He became a cloud of ash and dissipating shadow, blown instantly away by the winds of the Void.
The sudden release threw Elara backward. She flew through the air, slamming hard onto the grassy earth of the Solid Lands.
She tumbled to a stop, gasping, clutching her chest. She scrambled up, crawling back toward the edge, reaching out for the bridge.
It was gone.
Without the Void to anchor the Light, the bridge had vanished the moment Kael did.
Elara stood on the cliff's edge of the free world. The wind here was gentle. The grass was cool and damp against her ankles. She looked at her hands. They were pale, cool to the touch. The lethal heat was gone. She was cured. She was free.
She stared into the swirling violet storm where the only person who could ever touch her had just dissolved into nothingness.
"Kael?" she whispered.
The only answer was the howling of the wind, cold and empty, wrapping around her like a shroud that would never, ever keep her warm.
