Chapter 1

Thermal Equilibrium

The air inside the Glass Conservatory did not smell like soil or blooming jasmine; it smelled of ozone and singed velvet. Elara sat on a stone bench, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Beneath her palms, the grey slate was turning a dull, angry red.
She focused on her breathing, trying to dim the light that lived beneath her skin. *Inhale. Contain. Exhale. Cool.* It didn't work. It never worked. A fern near her elbow withered, its fronds curling into ash simply because she had leaned too close. She was nineteen years old, and she was a walking forest fire.
"You're running hot tonight," a voice said from the darkness.
Elara didn't jump. She felt the temperature drop before she heard him. The oppressive heat radiating from her body met a sudden, biting chill, and the air between them hissed.
Kael stepped out from the shade of a massive, bioluminescent oak. He looked like a smudge on the world, his edges slightly blurred as if the light refused to touch him properly. He wore the standard grey tunic of the Arcanum, but on him, it looked like a shroud.
"They moved the schedule up," Elara whispered, finally looking at him. Her eyes, usually a soft amber, were glowing like molten gold. "Headmaster Vance signed the transfer order. They’re moving you to the Northern Spire at dawn."
Kael stopped a foot away from her. The proximity was a relief. His natural aura of absolute zero acted as a balm against her feverish skin. "I know. That’s why we’re leaving. Now."
"It’s suicide, Kael. The Void storm outside... no one has crossed it without a ship."
"And no one has ever had us." Kael reached out.
It was a simple gesture, one that would have cost any other student their hand. But when Kael’s fingers brushed Elara’s, there was no smell of burning flesh. Instead, a thick plume of white steam curled up from their joined palms. The hiss of thermal equalization was the only sound in the vast, empty greenhouse.
Elara shuddered, a tear slipping down her cheek and evaporating before it hit her chin. The relief was narcotic. For the first time in hours, her skin didn't feel like it was splitting open. Kael was the drain for her overflow; she was the fire for his frozen hearth.
"They call us weapons," Kael said softly, his thumb tracing the back of her burning hand. The steam swirled around their faces. "They think we’re dangerous apart. They have no idea what we are together."
"That’s what I’m afraid of," Elara admitted, though she didn't pull away. She couldn't. The thought of tomorrow—of the cold Northern Spire and the empty, burning solitude—was worse than death. "If we resonate... if we can't control the feedback loop..."
"Then we burn out together," Kael said, his dark eyes steady. "Better that than freezing alone in a cell."
He tightened his grip. "Are you ready, Elara?"
She looked at the bioluminescent flowers, the beautiful cage that had held them for ten years. She squeezed his hand, the steam thickening into a fog.
"I'm ready."
