Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The cold hit Caleb like a physical wall as he stepped onto the darkened ice of the University Arena. At 1:00 AM, the facility felt less like a sports complex and more like a cathedral dedicated to the gods of frost and carbon steel. The only light came from the dim emergency LEDs overhead, casting long, spindly shadows that stretched toward center ice.
"I’m just saying, if we get caught, I’m telling Coach this was your idea," Jax muttered, his skates crunching rhythmically behind Caleb. "And I’m definitely not mentioning the nachos."
Caleb gripped the cardboard tray of lukewarm, neon-orange cheese and salty chips like it was a holy relic. "It’s not an idea, Jax. It’s a necessity. The Rink Ghoul hasn't seen a sacrifice in three seasons. That’s why my plus-minus is in the gutter. It’s science."
Jax snorted, his goalie pads clacking as they glided toward the face-off circle. "It’s not science. It’s a breakdown in your defensive fundamentals and a moderate case of insanity. There is no ghoul, Caleb. There’s just a very tired Zamboni driver and us, two idiots who are going to get suspended."
"Shh!" Caleb hissed, reaching the center logo. He set the nachos down with trembling hands. "You have to be respectful. The legend says he lives in the rafters and only descends when the arena is silent."
Caleb began the ritual. It involved a series of frantic, jerky movements that looked less like a prayer and more like a man trying to fight off a swarm of invisible bees while wearing skates. He spun in three tight circles, tapped his stick against the ice four times, and then let out a low, mournful howl that echoed off the empty bleachers.
Jax, leaning bored against the players' bench, saw an opportunity. He quietly slipped toward the PA system booth, which had been left unlocked by a distracted intern earlier that evening. He tapped the microphone, adjusted the gain, and let out a low, guttural rasp.
*"Caaaaleeeeeb…"* the speakers groaned, the sound bouncing violently around the hollow space.
Caleb froze mid-spin, his eyes wide. "Did you hear that? Jax? It’s him!"
From the darkness of the booth, Jax muffled a laugh and leaned back into the mic. *"The cheese… is… acceptable…"*
"He likes the nachos!" Caleb whispered, his voice cracking with terror and triumph. "I knew it! Oh Great Ghoul of the Blue Line, grant me a goal! End the slump!"
The atmosphere shifted instantly. A heavy thud sounded from the far end of the rink, near the equipment room. A tall, hooded figure emerged from the shadows, silhouetted by a single flickering hallway light. It moved slowly, purposefully, toward the ice.
"Holy—" Jax’s voice came through the PA, un-distorted and very human. "Caleb, someone’s actually there!"
Caleb didn't wait to see if it was a ghost or a disgruntled coach. Pure, unadulterated panic took over. "Take it! Just take it and let me live!" he shrieked. He scooped up the tray of nachos and launched it toward the approaching figure with the strength of a man possessed.
The tray soared through the air, trailing a golden arc of processed cheese. At the same moment, Caleb’s skates hit a patch of stray slush. His feet flew out from under him. He went down hard on his backside, sliding at high speed toward the empty net at the far end. As he slid, his stick—trapped between his legs—whacked a stray puck that had been sitting near the crease.
The puck zinger across the ice, bar-down, into the net with a satisfying *clink*.
"I did it!" Caleb yelled from his seated position, sliding directly into the goal frame.
The "Ghoul" stopped ten feet away, wiping a glob of nacho cheese off his jumpsuit. He pulled back his hood to reveal the bewildered face of Mr. Henderson, the night janitor.
"Son," Mr. Henderson said, looking at the mess on his chest and then at the shivering defenseman in the net. "I was just coming out here to tell you the sensors went off. And to ask why there’s a goalie talking into the PA system about snacks."
Jax emerged from the booth, doubled over in laughter, clutching his phone. "I got it! I got the whole thing on video! The scream, the nacho toss, the fluke goal—everything!"
Caleb sat in the net, breathless and covered in a light dusting of ice shavings. He looked at the puck sitting in the back of the mesh, then up at the rafters. Despite the embarrassment and the impending lecture from Mr. Henderson, a manic grin spread across his face.
"He accepted the sacrifice, Jax," Caleb said, pointing at the net. "I scored. The slump is over."
Jax skated over, offering a hand to pull his friend up. "Sure, buddy. The Great Ghoul of the Janitor’s Closet has blessed you. But you’re buying me a real burger on the way home, or this video goes on the team group chat."
Caleb stood up, wobbling but victorious. "Deal. But we’re leaving the rest of the nachos for the spirits. Just in case."
