Chapter 4
The Ultimatum

Cole didn't flinch. He didn't deny it. He simply leaned back, a look of profound satisfaction settling over his sharp features.
"He was incredibly sweet, your David," Cole murmured, his eyes glowing brighter in the dim crimson light. "A very pure vintage of despair. But the meal was incomplete."
"You monster," Mia choked out, her chest heaving. She tried to slide out of the booth, her mind screaming at her to run, to escape the subterranean hellhole.
But as she moved, the air around the table solidified into a wall of localized, suffocating heat. It pressed against her chest, heavy and paralyzing, sapping the strength from her muscles. She couldn't breathe. The patrons around them continued their slow, rhythmic swaying, completely oblivious to the supernatural terrors unfolding inches away.
"I am a creature of appetite, Mia," Cole said, his tone conversational, as if they were discussing the weather. "I feed on the profound, the tragic. But I am also meticulous. I don't leave loose ends. I left you alive that night because the trauma needed time to ripen. I needed your grief to mature into this exquisite agony you carry now."
"I'll kill you," Mia rasped, though she barely had the energy to keep her head up. The heat was boiling the sweat off her skin.
"You will try, and you will fail, and the phantom fire will eventually drive you to madness," Cole countered, sliding across the curved booth until he was sitting right beside her. He cornered her against the wall. The heat radiating from his body was agonizing, yet bizarrely seductive.
He raised a hand, trailing a finger dangerously close to her lips. "Or, we can conclude our business. You have a choice, Mia. Keep the memory. Leave this room knowing that I murdered the love of your life, knowing what I am, and knowing you are entirely powerless to stop me. Live with the burning truth."
He leaned in, his lips hovering inches from hers. The smell of cedar and smoke was entirely overpowering now.
"Or," Cole whispered, his breath scorching her cheek, "surrender. Let me kiss the burn away. I will take the memory of the fire. I will take the memory of David. I will take the hatred. I will leave you peaceful, silent, and wonderfully hollow."
