Chapter 3
The Blood Pact
❧
The gallery erupted into hushed, fearful whispers. The auctioneer stared at the shattered glass, visibly unnerved, but quickly regained his professional composure. "One hundred thousand going once... twice..."
"Wait," Clara shouted, standing up. The phantom water was at her waist now, freezing her core, making her teeth chatter. She couldn't let Julian take it. She couldn't let Maya's soul become a curiosity on a billionaire's shelf.
"Miss Hayes," the auctioneer warned, his eyes narrowing. "You have no funds."
"I offer a blood pact," Clara declared, her voice ringing clear over the broken lullaby.
The entire cistern went dead silent. Even Julian Vance lost his smug composure, sitting up straight, his face draining of color. In the underground occult market, a blood pact wasn't a metaphor. It was an arcane, binding contract. It meant forfeiting one's life force, one's very soul, as collateral to the House if a debt could not be paid.
The auctioneer looked at the syndicate overseers in the front row. A slow, synchronized nod rippled through them. "The House accepts the pact in exchange for Lot 44. Do you concede, Mr. Vance?"
Julian swallowed hard, looking at Clara as if she were a dead woman walking. He lowered his paddle. "I concede."
"Sold." The gavel struck the wood.
Clara pushed past Julian, her legs feeling incredibly heavy as she waded through the phantom flood toward the podium. Her breath came in ragged gasps. She reached the stage, the tinkling lullaby echoing in her ears, vibrating in her jaw. She reached out and placed her bare hand on the damp, rotting wood of the music box.
Instantly, the world vanished.
A visceral, agonizing vision tore through Clara's mind. She wasn't in the gallery anymore; she was submerged in the freezing, pitch-black currents of the Weeping River. Silt blinded her. The pressure was immense. Below her, illuminated by a pale, unnatural glow, was Maya.
Maya wasn't struggling. She was suspended in the water, looking down into a cavernous trench at the riverbed. From the darkness, a massive, shifting shadow composed of grasping hands and drowned faces reached upward.
* The toll,* a voice whispered in Clara’s mind, ancient and furious. *The bloodline owes the toll.*
Clara watched in absolute horror as the shadow reached past Maya, aiming straight up toward the surface—aiming for Clara, who had been standing on the bridge that night. But Maya intercepted it. She grabbed the shadowy appendage, intertwining her fingers with the darkness.
* Take me,* Maya’s voice echoed in the water, filled with a terrifying, serene resolve. *Spare Clara. Take me instead.*
Maya let out her last breath, the silver bubbles rising to the surface, and allowed the dark current to drag her into the abyss.
