Chapter 6
Neon and Snow
❧
The temporal rift violently spat them out.
They hit the ground hard, tumbling across the snow-covered quad. The violet tear snapped shut behind them with a sharp, concussive boom, leaving only the howling wind of the storm.
Elara lay on her back in the snow, gasping for air, her chest heaving. Her hands were bleeding, her clothes were torn, and she had never felt more invincible.
Beside her, Arthur groaned, pushing himself up onto his elbows. He brushed the snow from his dark hair, coughing out a cloud of ancient stone dust.
He looked around.
The gothic stone buildings of 1899 were gone. In their place stood towering structures of glass and steel. Above them, cutting through the heavy snowfall, were the brilliant, glowing neon signs of the modern urban skyline, casting vibrant streaks of pink, blue, and gold across the white ground. The roar of a snowplow echoed from a distant street.
Arthur stared at the neon lights, his mouth slightly open, absolute, unadulterated awe washing over his soot-stained face. He was an engineer. He was a man who dreamed of the future. And he was currently sitting in it.
"Good God," Arthur breathed, his voice filled with reverence. He slowly turned his head to look at Elara.
Elara sat up, pushing her tangled hair out of her face. The anxious, fragile girl was gone. She was a survivor. She had looked death and time in the face and defied them both.
Arthur scrambled across the snow, dropping to his knees in front of her. He reached out with shaking hands, gently cupping her face, his thumbs wiping the dirt and blood from her cheeks.
"You came back," Arthur whispered, tears shining in his hazel eyes, reflecting the neon lights of the 21st century. "You defied the laws of physics. You came back for me."
"I told you," Elara smiled, a fierce, radiant expression breaking across her face. "Where I come from, women don't hide."
Arthur let out a breathless laugh, a sound of pure, overwhelming joy. He leaned forward and kissed her. It wasn't a desperate kiss against the freezing dark; it was a triumphant, passionate celebration of life, warmth, and the impossible reality they had forged together.
Elara wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him close, feeling the solid, steady beat of his heart against her chest.
Arthur pulled back slightly, looking up at the glowing skyline, his brilliant mind already racing with the endless possibilities of the modern world. He looked back down at Elara, his eyes shining with profound love and boundless excitement.
"So," Arthur smiled, intertwining his fingers securely with hers. "Are you going to show me how they built those glass towers, or do we have to freeze out here all night?"
Elara laughed, standing up and pulling him to his feet. She held his hand tight, looking out at the beautiful, chaotic, modern world she was no longer afraid to live in.
"Come on," Elara said, leading him toward the glowing lights of the city. "Let's go explore the future."
