Chapter 9
The Authentic Truth
❧
The crowd murmured, confused by the sudden appearance of the billionaire CEO in the middle of an indie showcase. Jax stepped forward, raising his guitar protectively, but Roxy threw a hand out, stopping him.
Roxy stared at Julian. His chest was heaving. His hair was a mess. But his gray eyes were burning with a fierce, absolute devotion that stole the breath from her lungs.
"Julian?" she whispered, backing away from the microphone. "What are you doing here?"
Julian reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He pulled out the thick, black folder. The Non-Disclosure and Financial Arrangement Contract.
He held it up in the spotlight so she could see it.
"I remember everything, Roxy," Julian said, his voice carrying without a microphone, raw and unshielded. "I remember drafting this. I remember buying your time. I was a cynical, ruthless coward who was too afraid of a real connection to just ask you out."
Roxy’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
Julian looked at the contract in his hands with profound disgust. In front of the entire underground club, he gripped the heavy stack of paper and ripped it violently in half. He dropped the shredded pieces onto the sticky, beer-stained stage floor, crushing them beneath his expensive leather shoe.
"The contract is dead," Julian vowed, stepping closer to her, closing the distance until he was towering over her. "The amnesia wasn't a glitch, Roxy. It stripped away all my armor. It showed me the man I actually am underneath all the corporate garbage. And that man belongs entirely to you."
Roxy looked down at the shredded paper, then up at his desperate, earnest face. The tears she had been fighting finally broke free.
"You threw the check at me," Roxy sobbed, her rebel pride fighting one last, dying battle.
"Because I was terrified that the only reason you were standing in my penthouse was because my signature was on it," Julian confessed, reaching out. His large hands gently cupped her face, his thumbs wiping the tears from her cheeks. "But I heard the song, Rox. I heard you."
He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers, oblivious to the hundreds of people watching them.
"I don't have amnesia," Julian whispered fiercely against her lips. "I know exactly who I am. And I know that I am helplessly, hopelessly in love with you. Please, come home."
Roxy looked into his gray eyes. The ice was gone forever. There was only the warm, endless winter ocean she had fallen for in the penthouse.
She let her guitar slide around to her back. She reached up, grabbing the lapels of his expensive suit jacket, and pulled him down.
Roxy kissed him. It was a messy, passionate, tear-stained kiss under the harsh red stage lights of the gritty underground club. Julian’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off the ground, holding her like she was the only real thing in his entire universe.
The crowd erupted into deafening cheers, the sound of clapping and whistling shaking the floorboards.
Roxy pulled back, breathless, a radiant, authentic smile spreading across her face. She looked at the shredded contract on the floor, and then at the man holding her. The rebel hadn't sold out. She had just found something worth surrendering for.
