Chapter 5

The Contract Leak

The week before the custody hearing was a domestic dream. The forced PR relationship had seamlessly morphed into a profound, genuine partnership. They cooked together. They laughed. They slept tangled in the same bed, waking up early to get Leo ready for school. Chloe was terrified by how easily she had slipped into the role of a parent, but the joy she felt watching Julian and Leo completely eclipsed the fear.
Then, the floor fell out.
It was Thursday morning. Chloe was in the penthouse kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee, when her cell phone rang. It was the managing partner of her PR agency.
"Have you seen TMZ?" her boss demanded, his voice a furious bark.
Chloe frowned, setting her mug down. "No, I'm just looking at the morning briefs."
"Turn it on. Aunt Beatrice acquired a copy of the forced PR contract. She bought off an intern in our legal department. She just leaked the entire document to the press."
Chloe’s blood turned to ice. She dropped the phone.
She ran to the living room, grabbing the television remote and flicking on the entertainment news channel.
There, plastered across the screen, was a high-resolution scan of the contract Julian had signed six weeks ago. The headline screamed in bold red letters: **FAKE FIANCÉE: HOLLYWOOD PLAYBOY PAYS PR SHARK TO STAGE FAMILY FOR CUSTODY BID.**
Julian walked out of the hallway, toweling his damp hair from a shower. He saw the television. He saw Chloe’s pale, horrified face.
The towel slipped from his hands.
"No," Julian breathed, stepping toward the screen. "No, no, no."
The news anchor’s voice droned on: *"Legal experts say this fraudulent stunt guarantees that family court judge Mary Higgins will grant full custody of the child to the aunt, Beatrice Fox. Furthermore, sources say the PR agency is facing a massive ethical investigation regarding Chloe Vance's involvement."*
Chloe covered her mouth, a profound, sickening nausea washing over her. It was over. The illusion was shattered, and it was taking their real family down with it.
The penthouse intercom buzzed violently. The lobby concierge’s voice crackled through the speaker. *"Mr Fox? I'm sorry to disturb you, but there is a mob of press in the lobby. And a woman named Beatrice Fox is here with her lawyers."*
"Send her up," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly dead.
Five minutes later, Beatrice Fox stood in the center of the penthouse living room. She was a severe, wealthy woman draped in tweed and pearls, wearing a smile of absolute, victorious malice. Flanking her were two men in dark suits.
"You always were a pathetic actor, Julian," Beatrice sneered, looking around the toy-strewn living room with blatant disgust. "Did you really think you could buy a mother for that child? A PR shark playing house?"
"Get out of my home," Julian snarled, taking a protective step in front of Chloe.
"I'm not leaving without my nephew," Beatrice said coldly. "The judge has seen the contract, Julian. The emergency hearing has been moved to this afternoon. You are going to walk into that mediation room and sign the voluntary surrender papers. If you fight me, I will ensure this contract goes to the ethics board. I will destroy Ms. Vance's career permanently. She will be blacklisted in this city, and you will lose anyway."
Chloe stepped around Julian, her professional fury overriding her panic. "You are extorting us. I'll have you arrested—"
"I don't care about my career!" Chloe yelled, turning to Julian. "Julian, do not listen to her. We will fight this. We will tell the judge the truth. We will tell her that things changed, that it's real now!"
Julian looked at Chloe. The fight had completely drained out of him. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire world burn to ash. He believed the narrative. He believed he was toxic, a liability who destroyed everything he touched.
"She's right, Chloe," Julian whispered, his voice cracking.
"What? No, Julian—"
"I'm a mess," Julian said, stepping away from her, putting emotional distance between them. "I've been playing a part my whole life. I dragged you into this. I forced you to play a mother when you never wanted to be one. I almost ruined your career."
"Julian, stop it," Chloe sobbed, reaching for his hand.
Julian pulled his hand away. "You're fired, Chloe."
The words hit her like a physical blow to the stomach.
"The PR contract is terminated," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. He turned to his aunt. "I'll be at the courthouse at two o'clock. Have the surrender papers ready."
Julian walked down the hallway, closing the door to his bedroom, locking himself away from the wreckage.
Chloe stood in the center of the living room, completely shattered. She had spent her life maintaining absolute control to avoid being hurt. And now, the moment she had finally let go, she had lost everything.
