Chapter 3
Night Terrors and Lunchboxes
❧
For the first two weeks, the penthouse operated under a state of armed domestic truce. Chloe ran the household with the same ruthless efficiency she used to manage corporate scandals. She coordinated Leo’s enrollment in a prestigious, private elementary school. She vetted the nanny for the hours they had to work. She orchestrated a highly visible "accidental" leak of their engagement to the press, complete with a carefully curated photo of Julian purchasing a massive diamond ring.
But beneath the pristine PR strategy, the messy reality of domestic life began to leak through the cracks of Chloe’s armor.
It was 3:00 AM on a Tuesday.
Chloe was a light sleeper, conditioned by years of late-night crisis calls from panicking publicists. When the muffled, high-pitched scream echoed from down the hallway, she was out of bed before her brain fully registered the sound.
She padded down the cold concrete hallway in her silk pajamas, stopping at the doorway to the guest room that had been converted into Leo’s bedroom.
The room was lit by a small, star-shaped nightlight. Leo was thrashing violently beneath his dinosaur-print duvet, crying out in a broken, ragged sob.
Chloe froze in the doorway, her chest tightening with absolute panic. Her instinct was to retreat. *Get Julian,* her brain screamed. *You are the fixer. You aren't the parent. You don't know how to do this.*
But as she took a step backward, Julian burst into the room from the opposite door, wearing only a pair of flannel pajama pants. He rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to his knees and gathering the sobbing boy into his arms.
"Hey, hey, I'm here, buddy," Julian whispered, his voice thick with sleep and desperate tenderness. He rocked the small boy back and forth, resting his chin on top of Leo's messy curls. "It's just a dream. Uncle Julian's got you."
Leo clung to Julian’s t-shirt, burying his face in his uncle’s chest. "I couldn't find her," Leo wept, his small voice cracking. "I looked everywhere and mommy wasn't there."
Julian closed his eyes, a look of profound, agonizing grief washing over his face. He pulled the boy tighter. "I know, Leo. I know. It hurts so much. But I'm not going anywhere. I promise."
Chloe stood in the shadows of the doorway, watching the Hollywood playboy—the man the tabloids claimed was too selfish to care for a houseplant—comfort a grieving child with a depth of love that stole the breath from her lungs. She realized, with a sudden, terrifying clarity, that Julian wasn't a liability. He was exactly the kind of parent she had always wished she had.
Leo’s sobs slowly quieted into exhausted hiccups. Julian continued to rock him, singing a low, off-key lullaby until the boy's breathing evened out into deep sleep.
Julian gently laid Leo back against the pillows, pulling the duvet up to his chin. He stood up, wiping a hand across his own exhausted, tear-streaked face, and turned toward the door.
He stopped when he saw Chloe standing in the shadows.
Chloe didn't run. For the first time in her life, she didn't retreat behind her professional walls. She stepped into the room, walked over to Julian, and gently placed a hand on his bare, muscular arm.
"You're doing a good job, Julian," Chloe whispered, her voice incredibly soft.
Julian looked down at her, his guard completely down. He let out a shaky breath, leaning his forehead against hers in the dark room, seeking comfort. "I am so terrified I'm going to mess him up, Chloe. I don't know how to fix this for him."
"You can't fix grief," Chloe murmured, her thumb lightly tracing the tense line of his bicep. "You just have to be there when the nightmares happen. And you were."
Julian pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locking onto hers in the dim light of the star projector. The air between them suddenly shifted, the domestic intimacy thickening into a heavy, simmering tension. For a long, dangerous moment, Chloe thought he was going to kiss her. And for an even more terrifying moment, she realized she desperately wanted him to.
"We should..." Chloe stammered, stepping back, the sudden panic of emotional vulnerability violently overriding the moment. "We have the paparazzi walk at the pier tomorrow. We need sleep."
Julian’s eyes darkened slightly with disappointment, but he nodded, accepting the retreat. "Right. The PR schedule. Goodnight, Chloe."
The next morning, the walls were firmly back in place. Chloe marched into the kitchen at 7:00 AM, dressed in a sharp pencil skirt and blouse, her clipboard in hand.
Julian was at the counter, humming under his breath as he carefully used a plastic mold to cut a sandwich into the shape of a tyrannosaurus rex. He placed the dinosaur sandwich into a bright green lunchbox, alongside a perfectly sliced apple and a handwritten note that read: *Have a roaring good day! Love, Uncle J.*
Chloe stared at the lunchbox, her heart executing a painful, complicated flutter. The playboy was dead. The parent had entirely taken over. And Chloe, terrified and thrilled in equal measure, was rapidly falling in love with both of them.
