Chapter 1

The Threshold of Antiquity

The subterranean levels of St. Jude’s Supernatural Ward smelled of industrial bleach, ozone, and the faint, unmistakable metallic tang of copper. Dr. Clara Vance stood over the stainless-steel basin of scrub station four, aggressively washing the blood from her forearms. It had been a grueling twelve-hour shift, but the sterile hum of the fluorescent lights grounded her. Here, science was God. Here, the chaotic, violent nature of the city’s supernatural denizens could be quantified, clamped, and sutured.
"Dr. Vance."
Clara didn't look up as the heavy swinging doors pushed open. "If it’s the harpy in bed three, tell her the sedatives will kick in shortly. I am off the clock, Marcus."
"It is not a hospital patient, Doctor," a deep, gravelly voice responded.
Clara turned off the water with her elbow and turned. Standing in the sterile hallway was not her charge nurse, but a towering man built like a concrete pillar. He wore a perfectly tailored nineteenth-century tailcoat over a crisp white cravat, looking entirely absurd against the backdrop of modern medical equipment. His eyes glowed a faint, predatory amber. A wolf shifter.
"My Alpha requires your presence," the enforcer stated, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "Lady Genevieve has collapsed. Her pups are in distress."
Clara’s jaw tightened. A cold spike of familiar anger wedged itself in her chest. Four years ago, she had lost a patient to the stubborn, archaic politics of an aristocratic shifter pack that had refused a C-section because it violated their 'natural' traditions. She had sworn never to let pack law supersede her medical authority again.
"If Lady Genevieve is in distress, you bring her to my trauma bay," Clara said, ripping a paper towel from the dispenser. "I don't make house calls for the aristocracy."
"The Sterling Manor is sealed. The Lady cannot be moved. You will come, Doctor, or I will carry you."
Twenty minutes later, Clara found herself in the back of a blacked-out town car, her heavy, reinforced medical jump bag clutched tightly in her lap. The car navigated the slick, rain-soaked streets of the modern metropolis before turning down an abandoned, dead-end alley in the historic district. The driver didn't brake. As the car sped toward a solid brick wall, the air rippled with a sickening distortion of magical wards.
They breached the glamour. The modern city vanished, instantly replaced by a sprawling, fog-drenched estate illuminated only by the flickering glow of gas lamps. Sterling Manor loomed against the dark sky, a massive architectural relic of the regency era, completely insulated from the twenty-first century.
Clara was escorted out of the car and up the sweeping marble steps. The heavy oak doors swung open, revealing a grand foyer draped in crimson velvet, smelling of beeswax, woodsmoke, and ancient wealth.
Standing at the base of the sweeping double staircase was Lord Julian Sterling.
He was a terrifyingly beautiful man, radiating the suffocating, primal authority of an apex predator. He wore a dark velvet frock coat that accentuated the broad, rigid lines of his shoulders. His dark hair was impeccably styled, and his pale, piercing gray eyes locked onto Clara with the absolute, uncompromising weight of an Alpha.
"Dr. Vance," Julian said, his voice a smooth, cultured baritone that echoed in the cavernous hall. "You took your time."
Clara marched forward, dropping her heavy medical bag onto the pristine marble floor with a loud, deliberate thud. "I am a maternal-fetal specialist, Lord Sterling, not a delivery service. Take me to your sister."
Julian’s gaze flicked to the reinforced black nylon bag. "Our healers have applied the poultices. Tradition dictates that no mechanized instruments are to be used within the manor walls. You will assess her with your hands, Doctor, nothing more."
Clara stepped directly into his space, tilting her chin up to meet his imposing height. "Listen to me very carefully. If your sister is in premature labor, those archaic poultices are doing nothing but masking the fetal heart rates. If you want those pups to survive the night, you will let me do my job, and you will get out of my way."
The ambient temperature in the foyer seemed to drop. Julian’s jaw clenched, the predatory alpha instinct warring with the desperate need to save his bloodline. He stared down at the fierce, pragmatic human doctor, the air crackling with a sudden, volatile tension.
"If she dies," Julian whispered softly, leaning in until Clara could feel the warmth of his breath, "your modern science will not protect you from my pack, Doctor."
"If you don't show me the stairs," Clara retorted, her pulse hammering but her voice steady, "you're going to be planning a funeral instead of a christening."
