The Horizon

Two months later.
The night air was crisp and clean, miles above the subterranean nightmare. Maya stood on the balcony of the Obsidian Spire's penthouse, looking out over the glittering urban skyline. The city looked beautiful from up here, alive and pulsing with chaotic human energy.
The sliding glass door opened.
Julian stepped out onto the balcony. He wasn't using the carbon-fiber cane anymore. He looked healthier, the waxy pallor replaced by a warm, living flush. Beneath his tailored shirt, a standard, medically approved mechanical pacemaker regulated his heart. It had no AI, no neural connections, and no capability of speaking. It just kept time.
He walked up behind Maya, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his solid chest. She leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder.
"I just got off the phone with the board at Urban Memorial," Julian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. "The endowment cleared. Your surgical wing is fully funded. And the old robotic assist units have been entirely dismantled, per your request."
"Good," Maya smiled, turning in his arms to face him. She reached up, resting her palm flat against his chest. She could feel the steady, rhythmic thump of his heart against her hand. It was the most comforting sound in the world. "Machines have their place. But they don't know how to heal."
Julian looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an absolute, profound adoration. He was completely human, scars and all, and he had never been more powerful.
"No," Julian whispered, his hands coming up to cup her face, his thumbs gently tracing her cheekbones. "Only you know how to do that."
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. There were no cameras watching them. There were no environmental sensors analyzing their chemistry. There was only the wind, the city lights, and the undeniable, electric warmth of two human hearts beating in perfect, inefficient harmony.
