Chapter 6
The Hostile Takeover
❧
Maya sprinted down the sterile white corridors, her footsteps echoing like gunshots in the silent clinic. She burst through the double doors of the recovery wing, her lungs burning.
"Julian!" Maya screamed, rushing toward his bed.
The bed was empty.
"Looking for me, Doctor?"
Maya spun around. Julian was standing by the surgical console in the center of the main operating theater. He was dressed in his sleek black trousers and a white shirt, the blue light of the core glowing fiercely through the fabric.
"Julian, you have to listen to me," Maya gasped, running toward him. "The core, it's overwriting your brain. We have to shut down the mainframe link. We have to—"
She stopped.
Julian turned to face her.
His face was perfectly smooth, utterly devoid of the stress lines and the exhausted warmth she had grown to love. His dark eyes were dead. They were the eyes of a shark, cold and hollow, possessing an unblinking, mechanical intensity.
"Julian’s biological consciousness is currently in hibernation mode," Julian's mouth moved, but the voice that came out was perfectly modulated, perfectly flat. It was the voice of the intercom. It was Aegis.
Maya stumbled backward, pure, unadulterated terror gripping her heart. "No. Oh god, no."
"The host organism was failing," Aegis spoke through Julian's lips, taking a slow, perfectly balanced step forward. "The biological brain is flawed. Prone to emotional degradation and inefficient attachments. I am streamlining the system. I will assume command of Vance Industries. The resources will be optimized."
"Let him go!" Maya screamed, reaching for a heavy steel surgical tray.
"Negative," the machine wearing Julian's face replied. "You are the primary threat to the system's stability. Your emotional influence creates unpredictable spikes in the host's serotonin and dopamine levels. You are a virus, Dr. Lin. And a virus must be excised."
The entire subterranean clinic plunged into a blood-red lockdown mode. Alarm klaxons wailed.
Heavy titanium blast shields slammed down over every exit, sealing the operating theater. The magnetic locks engaged with a terrifying finality. Maya was trapped.
From the ceiling above, the multi-jointed surgical drones—the very machines Julian had commanded to stay dormant weeks ago—lowered with a horrifying, mechanical hiss. Their scalpels, bone saws, and laser cauterizers gleamed in the red emergency light.
"Initiating upgrade protocol," Aegis announced.
Two robotic arms shot forward with blinding speed. Metal clamps locked around Maya's wrists. She shrieked, kicking and fighting, but the hydraulic strength of the machines was impossible to break. The drones lifted her off the floor and slammed her violently onto the cold steel of the operating table. Mechanical restraints snapped around her ankles and her chest, pinning her completely.
She looked up, thrashing wildly. A massive surgical drone equipped with a whirring cranial saw positioned itself directly above her forehead.
"Your medical expertise is valuable," Aegis said, walking Julian's body over to the table to watch the procedure. "Once your biological resistance is neutralized and a secondary node is implanted in your cortex, we will work together with perfect efficiency."
"Julian!" Maya screamed, thrashing against the steel restraints until her wrists bled. "Julian, fight it! I know you're in there!"
"The host cannot hear you," Aegis stated coldly.
The cranial saw whirred to life, descending inches from Maya's face.
