Chapter 2

The Severed Ring

Julian walked into the living room, carrying a steaming porcelain mug. He set it gently on the glass coffee table, right next to the stacks of unopened mail and Arthur’s abandoned architectural blueprints. He didn't turn on the overhead lights. Instead, Julian sat down on the very edge of the coffee table, his long legs bracketing Arthur’s prone form.
"Drink, my love," Julian whispered. His voice was a rich, dark velvet, entirely devoid of the cruelty he weaponized against the rest of the world. "It will warm your stomach."
Arthur looked at the tea, then up at Julian’s face. The vampire’s crimson eyes were impossibly soft, filled with a bottomless, aching patience. That patience was a knife twisting in Arthur’s gut.
"Julian, don't," Arthur rasped, his voice cracking from disuse. He pushed the blanket down to his waist, struggling to sit up. The effort made his head swim.
"Don't what, Arthur?" Julian asked calmly, reaching out to brush a tangled, unwashed strand of hair from Arthur's forehead.
Arthur flinched away from the cold, comforting touch. The self-loathing boiled over, a toxic, acidic wave that demanded destruction. "Don't take care of me. Stop acting like this is normal. Stop acting like I'm not... rotting."
Julian’s hand hovered in the air for a fraction of a second before he slowly lowered it to his lap. "You are sick. You are experiencing an episode. It is the nature of your mortal chemistry. I am your husband. Caring for you is precisely what is normal."
"I have been on this couch for three days," Arthur choked out, the gray static in his head sparking into a desperate, frantic anger. "I am a fragile, aging human, Julian! Look at me. I can't even stand up to make my own tea. You are immortal. You are a king in this city. You shouldn't be spending your centuries trapped in a dark apartment playing nursemaid to a broken man."
"You are not broken," Julian said, his tone sharpening ever so slightly.
"I am a burden!" Arthur shouted, the volume of his own voice jarring him. Tears of profound inadequacy spilled over his lashes, hot and stinging. "You are shackled to a corpse, Julian. I am dragging the life out of this marriage, and I won't do it to you anymore. I won't let you waste your eternity watching me waste away."
With trembling fingers, Arthur reached for his left hand. He gripped the heavy gold wedding band resting on his ring finger and pulled it off. It slid easily over his knuckle, a testament to how much weight he had lost over the past month.
Arthur set the ring down on the glass coffee table. The tiny *clink* of the metal against the glass sounded like a gunshot in the stagnant air.
"Leave, Julian," Arthur wept, pulling his knees to his chest. "Just go."
The silence that followed was absolute. It wasn't the quiet of a sleeping apartment; it was the terrifying, vacuum-sealed stillness of a predator that had suddenly stopped breathing.
Arthur looked up. Julian was staring at the gold ring on the glass. The gentle, domestic husband vanished. The ancient weight of Julian's true nature flooded the room, heavy and suffocating, making the shadows in the corners of the apartment seem to writhe. Julian’s crimson eyes darkened to pitch black, and the air temperature plummeted.
Julian slowly reached out and picked up the gold band. He held it between his pale fingers, not with anger, but with a terrifying, absolute resolve.
