Chapter 7
The Final Ornament
❧
The elevator ride up to the penthouse felt like an ascension into purgatory. As the numbers climbed, the frozen slush melted off Silas's boots, leaving dirty, pathetic puddles on the pristine marble floor of the cab. His skin was mottled, his lips a terrifying shade of blue, his entire body trembling with mild hypothermia.
The doors chimed and parted.
The penthouse was exactly as he had left it. Warm, perfectly climate-controlled, and smelling of cedar and vanilla.
Julian was sitting in the plush leather armchair by the twelve-foot Christmas tree. He was wearing a tailored velvet smoking jacket, holding a crystal tumbler of amber whiskey. The soft, cool-white LED lights of the tree reflected in his dark, triumphant eyes. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly satisfied.
He had known. He had simply waited for the winter to break Silas's spirit for him.
Silas stepped out of the elevator. The heavy cashmere coat slipped from his frozen, trembling shoulders, pooling on the floor. He stood there, shivering, defeated, utterly broken.
"I'm sorry," Silas rasped, his voice barely a whisper, his vocal cords damaged by the freezing wind. "I'm sorry. Please. I'm so cold."
Julian set his whiskey glass on the side table. He stood up, walking slowly across the plush carpet until he stood in front of Silas. He reached out, his warm, dry hands cupping Silas's freezing, wet cheeks.
"Shh," Julian murmured gently, his voice practically purring with twisted affection. "It's all right, my sweet boy. The world out there is cruel. It's too hard for someone like you. I told you that. But you're safe now. You're home."
Silas closed his eyes, leaning into the warmth of Julian's hands, hot tears of absolute surrender leaking through his lashes. He had lost. He would never leave this apartment again.
"I have a Christmas present for you," Julian whispered, stepping back. He reached into the pocket of his velvet jacket and pulled out a slim, black velvet box. He snapped it open.
Inside resting on white satin was a thick, black leather choker. In the center, where the throat would be, was a heavy, gleaming platinum lock. It wasn't jewelry. It was a collar.
Julian pulled the leather collar from the box. He stepped behind Silas, wrapping the thick leather around the boy's neck. Silas didn't flinch. He didn't resist. He just stood completely still, staring blankly ahead as Julian fastened the buckle at the nape of his neck.
A sharp, metallic *click* echoed in the quiet foyer as Julian engaged the platinum lock. He slipped the tiny silver key into his own pocket.
"There," Julian breathed, kissing the freezing skin behind Silas's ear. "Perfect. Absolutely perfect."
Julian guided Silas by the shoulders, leading him away from the door and into the living room. He sat Silas down on the edge of the long, curved sofa, directly in front of the towering Christmas tree. Julian draped a heavy, heated cashmere blanket over Silas's trembling shoulders, then poured him a small glass of whiskey to warm his blood.
Silas took the glass with numb fingers. He didn't drink it. He just sat there, wrapped in cashmere, the heavy leather collar tight around his throat, feeling the exact moment his soul quietly gave up and died.
He stared blankly at the twelve-foot Christmas tree, at the hundreds of glittering, fragile glass ornaments hanging motionless on the artificial branches. They were beautiful. They were perfect. They were entirely trapped in their designated places, existing only to be looked at by the master of the house.
Silas slowly turned his head, looking past the tree, out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The blizzard raged on outside, a terrifying, chaotic, freezing void. But inside, it was warm. Inside, it was effortless.
Silas took a slow sip of the whiskey, the fire burning down his throat, and accepted his place. He was no longer a person. He was just the final, most expensive ornament Julian had acquired for the holidays, perfectly placed, locked away, and entirely, completely owned.
