Chapter 3

The Midpoint Twist

By the first week of February, the dynamic in the penthouse had fundamentally shifted. The open hostility had dissolved into a quiet, tentative domesticity. Chloe found herself looking forward to the sound of his key in the lock. Declan began leaving a fresh cup of her favorite artisanal coffee on the counter before he left at 5:00 a.m.
But it was what she discovered outside the penthouse that truly unbalanced her.
She arrived at her studio one Tuesday morning to find a fleet of HVAC technicians installing a state-of-the-art heating system. When she demanded to know who was paying for it, the foreman muttered something about an anonymous corporate grant. Later that afternoon, her notoriously aggressive landlord called to cheerfully inform her that her lease had been paid in full for the next five years.
Chloe knew exactly who had done it. Declan. The man who supposedly only cared about profit margins was secretly pouring capital into her chaotic, unprofitable art sanctuary.
Why? Why would a man who treated their marriage like a hostage negotiation care if her students were warm?
The question gnawed at her, driving her back to the penthouse early. She needed to confront him, to thank him, to demand an explanation. But Declan wasn't home yet.
Wandering through the quiet apartment, Chloe realized she had a smudge of India ink on her thumb and needed a specific solvent she had left in her other bag. She walked down the hall, intending to go to her room, but paused in front of Declan’s home office. *Strictly off-limits.*
She hesitated. The door was slightly ajar.
Chloe pushed it open. The office was as pristine as the rest of the apartment, dominated by a massive oak desk. She stepped inside, feeling a thrill of trespassing. She wasn't looking for secrets, just a pen or a cloth, but her eyes landed on a thick, leather-bound folder sitting dead center on the desk.
The embossed gold letters read: *Sterling Holdings - Initial Merger Draft.*
Curiosity overwhelmed her. She opened the folder. The pages were covered in dense legalese, but what caught her eye were the margins. Declan had heavily annotated the document in his sharp, aggressive handwriting.
She flipped to the section detailing the bailout terms. There, crossed out in harsh red ink, was a proposal from her father: *Sterling Holdings offers 60% equity and a seat on the board.*
Next to it, Declan had written: *Unacceptable. Equity is meaningless without control.*
She flipped to the next page. A new clause had been inserted, printed freshly, but with a handwritten note next to it from Declan’s lawyer: *Declan, are you sure about this? Forcing a marriage clause is highly irregular.*
Beneath it, Declan had scrawled a reply that made Chloe’s blood run cold, then blindingly hot.
* It is the only condition that matters. Draw up the papers. I am not bailing out Arthur Sterling. I am securing Chloe. She is non-negotiable.*
Chloe dropped the folder as if it had burned her.
Her breath hitched in her throat. She had spent the last month believing her father had sold her off to appease a corporate shark. She had believed she was a sacrificial lamb offered up to save the family. But the truth was infinitely more complex, and infinitely more terrifying.
Her family hadn't offered her. Declan had *demanded* her.
He had leveraged the collapse of her family's legacy to force her into his life. He hadn't done it for optics. He hadn't done it for the board.
* He has been in love with me,* she realized, the thought hitting her like a physical blow. *My brother’s best friend. The stoic, unfeeling robot. He has been watching me for years, and he orchestrated an entire corporate takeover just to make me his.*
