The Confession

By Sunday night, the rain had returned, a slow, mournful drizzle weeping against the expansive glass windows of the bedroom. The city lights far below offered no comfort, only a cold, indifferent glow.
Julian lay in Elias’s perfectly made bed, enveloped in crisp white sheets that made his complexion look even more ashen. He had been sleeping for nearly twenty-four hours, his breathing shallow and uneven. Elias sat in the gray armchair by the window, entirely motionless. He hadn't slept, hadn't eaten. He merely watched the slow, fragile rise and fall of Julian's chest, his mind trapped in a loop of devastating calculus.
Around midnight, Julian stirred. His dark eyes fluttered open, heavy and exhausted. He turned his head slowly, finding Elias in the shadows.
"You look awful," Julian whispered, his voice barely a rasp.
Elias leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, burying his face in his hands. "You almost died on my kitchen floor."
Julian offered a weak, entirely unapologetic smile. He reached out a trembling hand, resting it on the edge of the mattress. Elias immediately moved to the bedside, taking Julian’s cold hand in both of his, pressing it against his lips.
"I know what's happening," Julian said softly, his thumb weakly brushing against Elias's knuckles. "The magic... it doesn't take root here. It's being pulled out of me. To be in your world, to live in this modern, ordinary space... it requires a toll."
Elias choked on a sob, his chest heaving. "Then you have to go back. You have to stay at the shop. You can't come here anymore."
"No," Julian replied, a stubborn edge bleeding into his fragile voice. "I don't care about the magic, Elias. I don't care about the shop. I only care about you."
"Julian, it's killing you!" Elias cried, his voice cracking, tears finally spilling hot and fast down his cheeks. "It's literally suffocating your heart. You are a creature of warmth and light, and my world is just... concrete. It's empty."
"It's not empty because you are in it," Julian insisted, gripping Elias's hand with the last fraction of his strength. His eyes shone with a desperate, devastating devotion. "I will let it fade. I will let all the magic burn out of me until there is nothing left but an ordinary man. If it means I get to stay in this apartment, in this bed, with you... I will gladly let it die."
Elias stared down at him, the silence of the room pressing in from all sides. Julian meant it. He was entirely willing to sacrifice the core of his being, to slowly wither away into a shadow of himself, just to fit into Elias’s mundane life. He was offering Elias the ultimate, cozy domesticity, but the price of admission was Julian's very soul.
It was the most beautiful, horrifying declaration of love Elias had ever heard. And he knew, with sudden, absolute clarity, that if he loved Julian back, he could not let him pay that price.
