Terms and Conditions

The University Architecture Studio was a chaotic sanctuary located on the top floor of the design building, boasting massive drafting tables, scattered X-Acto knives, and panoramic windows that overlooked the glittering urban sprawl. At 2:00 AM on a Tuesday, it was empty except for Harper and Leo.
They sat opposite each other at her drafting table. Between them lay a crisp, white legal pad.
"Section One: Public Displays of Affection," Harper announced, tapping her pen against the paper. "We need to be convincing, but I have boundaries. Hand-holding in public is acceptable. Arms around the waist. Occasional cheek kissing for greetings and farewells."
Leo leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. He had shed his suit jacket hours ago, his white button-down sleeves rolled up to his forearms. "If my father is watching, a cheek kiss looks like we're distant cousins. We have to be able to kiss on the mouth, Harper. Nothing gratuitous, but it has to look natural."
Harper swallowed, a sudden, uncomfortable flutter rising in her chest. She pushed it down immediately. "Fine. Closed-mouth kissing for audiences only. Section Two: Time Commitment. Three mandatory appearances per week. Sunday dinner is non-negotiable. Two campus appearances—coffee, library, or crossing the quad—to establish public precedent."
"Agreed," Leo said, watching her write. "Section Three: The Backstory. How did we meet?"
"We met here, in the library," Harper improvised quickly. "You spilled coffee on my scale model of a sustainable housing project. You were arrogant; I yelled at you. You found my fierce independence charming, bought me a new supply of balsa wood to apologize, and wore me down over three weeks."
Leo raised an eyebrow, a genuine smile breaking through his usually guarded expression. "I was arrogant?"
"You're a finance major with a trust fund. It’s an easy sell," Harper deadpanned, though a small smile tugged at her own lips. "Which brings us to the most important part. Section Four."
She drew a thick line under the Roman numeral IV on the legal pad.
"Section Four: The Emotional Firewall," Harper stated, her voice hardening. She looked directly into Leo’s eyes, needing him to understand the absolute gravity of this rule. "This is a business arrangement. We do not blur the lines. We do not trauma-dump. We do not catch feelings. The moment either of us begins to cross the line from professional to personal dependency, the contract is null and void, and you pro-rate my payment."
Leo’s smile faded. He studied her, his gaze piercing through her sarcastic armor. He recognized the heavy iron walls she had built around herself. He didn't know who had hurt her, but he knew damage when he saw it. He had his own cage; hers was just made of isolation rather than expectation.
"I understand," Leo said softly, his voice losing its usual sharp edge. "No real intimacy. We keep it strictly business."
"Strictly business," Harper echoed, writing it down. She ripped the page from the legal pad, signed her name at the bottom, and slid it across the table.
Leo took her pen. His fingers brushed against hers for a fraction of a second—a spark of static electricity that made Harper’s breath hitch. He signed his name with a bold, sweeping flourish.
The contract was sealed.
