Chapter 5

Shattered Glass

The ride back to the high-rise was a suffocating nightmare of silence.
Clara sat huddled against the passenger door, her body trembling so violently her teeth rattled. She stared at Silas, the man who had bathed her, fed her, and held her through the terrifying void of her mind. The man she thought was her anchor. He drove with white-knuckled intensity, his jaw clenched, his eyes fixed on the snowy road. He looked like a stranger. He looked like a monster.
When they reached the penthouse, Silas marched her to the door, pressed his thumb to the biometric scanner, and shoved her inside.
The heavy steel door slammed shut behind them, the locks engaging with a heavy, definitive *clack*.
Clara backed away from him, stumbling into the living room, putting the massive sofa between them. The fire was still burning in the grate, the holiday tree still twinkling, but the warmth was gone. The penthouse was exactly what the flashing red light had warned her it was: a high-altitude prison.
"Who are you?" Clara screamed, the sound tearing from her throat. "What did you do to me?!"
Silas slowly took off his coat, draping it over a chair with terrifying calm. He didn't look apologetic. He didn't look ashamed. He looked like a man who had finally been relieved of the burden of pretending to be sane.
He walked around the sofa, slowly advancing on her. Clara backed up until her spine hit the cold glass of the floor-to-ceiling window. Behind her, the city was a dizzying forty-five stories down. She was trapped.
"I am exactly who I told you I am," Silas said, his voice dropping into a dark, hypnotic register. "I am the man who loves you. I am the man who takes care of you."
"She said you stalked me!" Clara cried, tears streaming down her face. "She said I had a restraining order! Did you... did you hurt me, Silas? Did you cause my accident?"
Silas stopped three feet away from her. He looked down, a flicker of genuine, twisted sorrow crossing his features. "You were running away," he whispered, the admission echoing in the quiet room. "You were going to get on a train to Chicago. To live in a freezing, tiny apartment, working a miserable job, entirely alone. You were always so lonely, Clara. So afraid. And you were running away from the only person who could ever truly protect you."
Clara covered her mouth with her hands, a sob wracking her body. "You hit me."
"You slipped," Silas corrected quickly, his eyes flashing with desperate intensity. "You were running from me in the alley behind your apartment, and you slipped on the ice. I watched you fall. I watched you hit your head. I thought you were dead."
He took a step closer, his hands reaching out, trembling slightly. "I carried you to my car. I brought my own private medical team here to save you. And when you woke up, looking at me with those beautiful, empty eyes... you didn't hate me anymore. You didn't look at me with fear. You looked at me like I was your whole world. Because I am, Clara. I erased the misery of your old life. I gave you a blank slate, and I filled it with nothing but love."
"You're insane," Clara gasped, shrinking away from his touch. "You kidnapped me. You held me hostage. All of this... the tree, the ring, the stories... it was all a lie."
"The circumstances were fabricated," Silas said, stepping directly into her space, his hands finally coming up to cage her against the glass. He leaned in, his yandere obsession radiating off him in waves. "But the devotion is real. Every touch, every kiss, every meal I made for you. I worship you, Clara. Nobody in that city down there will ever love you the way I do. They let you vanish, didn't they? It's been a month, and nobody came looking for you but a casual coworker. Your old life was a void of loneliness. I am your cure."
He pressed his forehead against hers. She was shaking, terrified, but the physical proximity of him, the familiar scent of cedar and bergamot, sent a confusing, deeply ingrained wave of comfort through her damaged brain. For three weeks, this man had been her god. Her protector. Her entire reality.
"Let me go," Clara whimpered, pushing weakly against his chest.
"Never," Silas breathed, his lips brushing against hers. "I will burn this city to the ground before I let you walk out that door again. You are mine. You have always been mine."
He stepped back, his expression hardening back into absolute control. He pulled out his phone, tapping a sequence on the screen. The heavy steel shutters above the glass windows suddenly began to lower, descending with a mechanical hum, blocking out the city, the snow, and the light, plunging the penthouse into the dim, amber glow of the fire.
The lockdown was complete.
"Go to your room, Clara," Silas ordered softly. "Rest. We will talk when you have calmed down."
