Chapter 1
The Blank Slate
❧
The first sensation was not pain, but a terrifying, absolute emptiness. It was a vast, echoing void where an entire lifetime of memories should have resided.
Clara opened her eyes, gasping as the sharp, blinding light of a winter morning pierced her vision. She squeezed her eyes shut, her hands weakly clutching at the thick, luxurious down comforter covering her. A dull, rhythmic throbbing pulsed at the back of her skull, a physical anchor to the surreal, floating sensation in her mind.
"Clara. Oh, thank god. Clara, sweetheart, don't move too fast."
The voice was a low, resonant murmur, thick with overwhelming relief. A warm, large hand gently enveloped hers, while another softly brushed the damp hair away from her forehead. Clara forced her eyes open again, blinking against the light until the blurry silhouette above her sharpened into focus.
He was strikingly handsome, with dark, perfectly styled hair and eyes the color of storm clouds. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal sweater, but his posture was entirely undone—he leaned over her with the desperate, ragged posture of a man who had been keeping a vigil for days.
"Who..." Clara’s voice was a dry, brittle rasp. She swallowed hard, panic rising like bile in her throat. She searched his face, searching for a spark of recognition, a name, a context. There was nothing. Just the terrifying, suffocating void. "Who are you? Where am I?"
The man’s expression shattered, a brief flash of devastating heartbreak crossing his features before he rapidly smoothed it into a mask of pure, soothing calm. He leaned closer, his scent—a rich blend of cedarwood and bergamot—enveloping her senses.
"My name is Silas," he said softly, his thumb tracing soothing circles on the back of her hand. "Silas Vance. You're safe, Clara. You're in our home."
"Our home?" Clara echoed, her eyes darting around the room.
It was a sprawling, ultra-modern master bedroom, encased entirely in floor-to-ceiling glass. Beyond the panes, a thick, mesmerizing snowfall descended over a dense urban skyline. The city looked distant, muffled, and freezing. But inside, the room was a haven of warmth, dominated by a massive stone fireplace where a fire crackled softly, casting dancing, amber shadows across the hardwood floors. It was beautiful. It was a gilded cage suspended in the winter sky.
"You had an accident," Silas explained, his voice a steady, rhythmic cadence designed to lower her heart rate. He kept his grip on her hand firm, grounding her. "You slipped on the ice three days ago. You hit your head on the pavement. The doctors said you suffered severe trauma. Retrograde amnesia. They told me you might wake up like this, but... seeing it..." He choked off the sentence, bringing her knuckles to his lips and pressing a reverent kiss against her skin. "I'm your fiancé, Clara. We've been together for four years."
"Fiancé," she whispered. The word felt completely alien.
A profound, suffocating terror gripped her chest. She didn't know her own middle name. She didn't know her favorite color. She had no parents, no childhood home, no past. She was a ghost haunting her own body. The isolation of it threatened to crush her lungs. She let out a small, terrified sob, her free hand coming up to grasp the fabric of Silas's sweater.
"I don't remember," she cried, the tears spilling over her lashes, hot and fast. "I don't remember anything. I'm empty."
"Shh, no, don't cry. Please, darling, don't cry," Silas murmured frantically. He shifted his weight onto the edge of the mattress, carefully gathering her into his arms. He pulled her against his chest, tucking her head beneath his chin. His embrace was incredibly tight, almost desperate, wrapping around her like a physical shield against her panic. "It’s okay. I remember enough for both of us. You aren't empty. You have me. You will always have me. I won't ever let you be alone. Do you hear me?"
Clara clung to him, burying her face in the warm cashmere of his sweater. The sheer intensity of his devotion was intoxicating. In a world where she possessed absolutely nothing, Silas was offering himself as her entire foundation. His heartbeat was steady beneath her ear, a metronome in the chaos of her mind.
"Just breathe, Clara," Silas whispered against her hair, his lips brushing her temple. "I've got you. I'm never letting you go. We're going to rebuild everything, right here. Together."
As the snow continued to fall outside the glass walls, Clara closed her eyes and let the warmth of his embrace lull her back to sleep. She was terrified of the dark void in her mind, but inside Silas's arms, the darkness didn't feel quite so vast.
