Chapter 11
The Velvet Future
❧
Four months later.
The autumn rain had given way to the crisp, clean chill of early winter. Inside The Velvet Vine, the amber lamps glowed warmly, casting long, soft shadows against the brick walls. The jazz record spun a lazy, comfortable melody into the air.
Maya Lin sat in her favorite corner velvet booth. She looked remarkably different. The dark circles under her eyes were gone. Her skin had a healthy, natural flush. She was wearing a thick, oversized, incredibly soft cashmere sweater—no silk, no corsets, no stilettos. She was still fighting her autoimmune condition; she still had days where the fatigue kept her in bed, and her joints still ached when it rained. But she was no longer at war with her body. She had learned to listen to it.
She had found a new job working remotely part-time for an independent historical society, cataloging digital archives at her own pace. She didn't have millions of dollars anymore, but she had enough.
Julian walked out from behind the bar, carrying a heavy crystal tumbler. He slid into the booth beside her, close enough that their shoulders pressed together.
"The new winter menu test," Julian murmured, setting the glass in front of her.
Maya picked it up, inhaling the scent. "Pine, cranberry, and toasted cinnamon." She took a slow sip, closing her eyes as the complex, beautiful flavors danced across her palate without a drop of alcohol. "It's perfect, Julian. Like drinking a winter forest."
"Not as perfect as the company," he said, slipping his arm around her waist and pulling her flush against his side.
Maya leaned her head on his shoulder, tangling her fingers with his. She listened to the steady, grounding rhythm of his heartbeat. The city outside was still a frantic, rushing machine of expectations, wealth, and power. But inside the sanctuary of the speakeasy, wrapped in the arms of the man who loved her exactly as she was, Maya had finally found her remedy. She was healthy, she was loved, and at long last, she was completely at peace.
